Module 12

Behavior of Light in Optical

Devices
Optical Devices
•it form images of objects
based on the light rays
that interact them
•Mirrors – form images
using reflected rays
•Lenses – form images
using refracted rays
Mirror and Images
• Image - a picture that is
produced by a camera, artist,
mirror, etc. It is also a mental
picture - the thought of how
something looks or might look
Two types of Image
• Real image – occur when
light rays actually intersect at
the image, making them
appear inverted or upside
down.
Real Image
Two types of Image
• Virtual image – occur when
light rays do not actually meet
at the image, but because the
eye projects light ray
backward, we are seeing an
image erect pr upright
Virtual Image
Mirrors
•Mirrors – optical
devices that permit the
reflection of light
•demonstrate the law of
reflection
•either in plane or
spherical mirror
Plane Mirrors
•It is consist of a flat, two
dimensional surface that
reflects the light
•always form an image that
has the same size as the
object
•Image is virtual – a cool
imaged, trapped within
the mirror, erect or upright
Spherical Mirrors
•In the form of a slice of
spherical surface
•Concave mirror
•Convex mirror
Spherical Mirrors
•Concave Mirror
– curves inward
like hallow inside
of sphere
•Image is either
virtual or real
depending on the
position
Spherical Mirrors
•Convex Mirror
– curves outward
like hallow
outside of sphere
•Image is always
virtual
Which side is concave and convex
mirror?
Lenses
•It is a shaped transparent
material that refracts light
to create image
•clear optical media that
allows the penetration of
light rays through them,
and then bend them
•Converging lens
•Diverging lens
Converging Lens
• A lens that thicker at the
middle
• Also known as convex lens
• real image formed
Diverging Lens
• A lens that thinner at the
middle
• Also known as concave lens
• virtual image is formed
What kind of image formed in
concave? In convex?
Lesson 3
Mirrors and Lenses in
Optical Instrument
Optical Instrument
• Camera – the word camera
evolves from the Latin term
meaning “dark chamber”
Optical Instrument
• Telescope – an optical device
that has the ability to make
faraway objects appear much
closer
Optical Instrument
• Binocular Telescope – is
composed of two identical
mirror mounted side by side
and aligned to point
accurately in the same
direction, allowing the viewer
to use both eyes when viewing
distant objects
