Active Elements

These elements are source of energy

1. Voltage source

2. Current Source
Basic Elements in Electric Circuits
● Resistors
○ Voltage linearly proportional to Current ( v = i.R)
Basic Elements in Electric Circuits

● Inductors
○ Voltage proportional to derivative of Current ( v = L . di/dt )
Basic Elements in Electric Circuits

● Capacitors
○ Voltage proportional to integral of Current ( v = 1/C . ∫ i dt )
Basic Elements in Electric Circuits

● Independent Sources (Voltage/ Current)

○ Voltage/ Current is completely independent of other circuit parameters
● Dependent Sources (Voltage/ Current)
○ Voltage/ Current depends upon current or voltage elsewhere in the circuit
Independent Voltage Sources
● Terminal voltage which is completely independent
of the current through it
○ Eg. Automobile storage battery
○ Subscript ‘s’ merely identifies the voltage as a
“source” voltage
○ Represents Ideal voltage source, which can deliver
infinite amount of energy
○ Current flow may be in either direction
○ Energy absorbed/ delivered depends on polarity of
Circuit symbols of the
voltage and direction of current independent voltage source
Symbols of voltage sources

(a) DC voltage source (b) Battery (c) AC voltage source

Independent Current Sources
● Current through the element is completely
independent of the voltage across it
● Ideal source is an approximation for a
physical element
● Can deliver infinite power from its
terminals, theoretically
● Voltage across a current source depends
entirely on the circuit to which it is
connected
Dependent Sources
● Use to model many electronic devices, such as transistors, operational amplifiers
and integrated circuits
○ (a) current-controlled current source
○ (b) voltage-controlled current source
○ (c) voltage-controlled voltage source
○ (d) current controlled voltage source
○ K is dimensionless; unit of g is A/V; unit of r is V/A
Example

vL = 5v2

v2 = 3V

vL = 15V
