The document discusses one-way and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). It provides an example comparing the strength of parachutes from four different suppliers. The mean strength and standard deviation for each supplier is given. ANOVA is used to determine if there are differences in the mean strength between suppliers.

Week 4 Analysis of Variance
(Anova)
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

1- One-way Analysis of Variance

2- Two-way Analysis of Variance
ANOVA: The objective is to analyze the differences among the group means, not the variances.
If we want to compare means of more than two populations, We use Analysis of Variance F test.

You have decided to design an experiment;

- with one factor: different suppliers, types of tires, marketing strategies, brands of
drugs, etc.,

- with several groups (such as four suppliers).

Example: Parachute Company Case Study

You are the production manager of the Perfect Parachute Company. Parachutes are
made using a synthetic fiber purchased from one of four different suppliers. One of
the most important quality characteristics of a parachute is its strength. Are there
any differences in the strength of the parachute that can be attributed to the four
suppliers?

We have decided to design an experiment;

- with one factor: different suppliers
- with several groups (four suppliers).
The five sample is collected from Supplier 1 Supplier 2 Supplier 3 Supplier 4
each supplier. The strength of the
18.5 26.3 20.6 25.4
parachute is measured by placing
them in a testing device that pulls 24.0 25.3 25.2 19.9
on both ends of a parachute until it
tears apart. 17.2 24.0 20.8 22.6

19.9 21.2 24.7 17.5

The amount of force is measured
18.0 24.5 22.9 20.4
on a tensile-strength scale, where
the longer the value, the stronger
the parachute.
x̄ 19.52 24.26 22.84 21.16
Is there any difference with
respect to mean of tensile-strength s 2.69 1.92 2.13 2.98
scale of parachute provided from
different suppliers.
• The total variation is subdividable into variation that is due to the differences
among the groups and variation that is due to the differences within the groups.

(Among Groups) Assuming;
SST 1. Each group follows a normal
distribution
2. They have equal variances.
