excluding industrial automation applications.
• A personal robot or a service robot for personal use is a service robot used
for non-commercial tasks, usually by by laypersons. (E.g domestic servant

workload of mankind
Roles Played By
Robots

•To make life more

efficient and less
stressful
Roles Played By
Robots
• To entertain
people
Roles Played By Robots
• Isaac Asimov thought of the ethical consequences
of robots, thus he formulated three laws in the
1940s.
• Law One: A robot may not injure a human
being or, through inaction, allow a human
being to come to harm.
• Law Two: A robot must obey the orders given
it by human beings except where such orders
would conflict with the First Law.
• Law Three: A robot must protect its own
existence as long as such protection does not
conflict with the First or Second Law.
Ethical dilemma Faced by
Robotics
• Who should be held accountable if someone’s safety is
compromised by a robot?
• Who should be blamed? The robot, the agent using the
robot, or the maker?
• The other ethical dilemma faced by robots is the emotional
components. (the Uncanny Valley)
Ethical dilemma
Faced by Robotics
• The uncanny Valley - The
uncanny valley is a
common unsettling
feeling people experience
when androids or
humanoid robots and
audio/visual simulations
closely resemble humans
in many respects but
aren't quite convincingly
realistic.
