Meaning Of Research
Research is the systematic efforts of gathering,
Analysing & interpreting the problems
confronted by humanity.
It is a thinking process and scientific method of
studying a problem and finding solution.
Objectives Research
Motivation in research
1. Desire to get a research degree along with its
consequential benefits
Types Of Research
Descriptive research
Seeks to describe the current status of an identified variable. These research
projects are designed to provide systematic information about a phenomenon. The
researcher does no usually begin with an hypothesis, but is likely to develop one after
collecting data. The analysis and syntesis of the data provide the test of the hypothesis.
Systematic collection of information requires careful selection of the units studied and
careful measurement of each variable.
Correlational Research
Attempts to determine the extent of a relationship between two or more
variables using statistical data. In type of design, relationship between and among a
number of facts are sought and interpreted. This type of research will recognize trends
and patterns in data, but it does not go so far in its analysis to prove causes for these
observed patterns. Cause an effect is not the basis of this type of observational research.
The data, relationships, and distributions of variable are studied only. Variable are not
manipulated, they are only identified and are studied as they accour in a natural setting.

Causal-Comparative/Quasiexperimental research p
r
Attempts to establish cause effect relationships among
i the variables. These types
l
of design are very similar to true experiments, but with some key differences. An
independent variable is identified but not manipulated by the 1experimenter, and effects of
,
the independent variable on the dependent variable are measured. The researcher does not
2
randomly assign groups and must use one that are naturally formed or pre-existing groups
0
exposed to the treatment variable are studied and compared to2 groups who are not. When
4
analyses and conclusions are made, determining causes must be done carefully, as other
variables, both known could still affect the outcome.
Experimental research
Often called true experimentation, use the scientific method to establish the cause-effect
relationship among a group of variables that make up a study. The true experiment is often
thought of as a laboratory study, but this is not always the case a laboratory setting has
nothing to do with it. A true experiment is any study where an effort is made to identify and
impose control over all other variables exept one. An independent variable is manipulated
to determine the effects on the dependent variables. Subject are randomly assigned to
experimental treatments rather than identified in naturally occurring groups.

Research Approaches
A research approach is the procedure selected by the researcher to
collage, analyze, and interpret data. There are three approaches to
research: quantitative,qualitative,and mixed methods.
• Quantitative research is the collection and analysis of numerical data to
describe, explain, predict,or control phenomena of interest. The analysis
of numerical data is complex and must be addressed
systematically.Quantitative research uses deductive reasoning.
• Qualitative research is the collection, analysis, and interpretation of
comprehensive narrative and visual data to gain insight into a
particular phenomenon of interest. Qualitative research an be
characterized as the simultaneous study of many aspect of phenomenon
and the attempt to study things as they axis naturally. This approach
uses inductive reasoning.
Significance of research
Research process
o The research process is a set of ordered steps that can
help you to ensure your research is complete.
o The research process is comprised of 5 steps: identifying
the purpose, designing a research plan, collecting the
data, and reporting the findings.
o There are two key types of research with their own
research methods: qualitative and quantitative research.
o A research question demonstrates the aim of the
research.
