Non Verbal Communication

Non-verbal communication refers to communicating without words through body language, facial expressions, eye contact, space between individuals, time, color, appearance, gestures, and paralanguage. KINESICS (Body Language)

Kinesics includes all actions, physical or physiological, automatic reflexes, posture, facial expressions, gestures and other body movements.

OCULESICS (Eye Contact)


Oculesics

is the way eyes are used during a communication exchange. This may include eye contact, avoidance of eye contact and all other eye movements.

When speaking to a group look at everyone. Look at reactive listeners If you have trouble staring someone on the eye, look at something else on their face Do not look at floor or scripts Do not look at Bad listeners Look at people who are key decision makers

PROXEMICS (Space Language)


Proxemics is the study of nature, degree and effect of the spatial separation individuals naturally maintain. Personal Space is your bubble-the space you place between yourself and others. Distance between us and other people tells us something important about our relations and the nature of our communication with them.

INTIMATE SPACE LANGUAGE


-physical contact/touch to 18 inches Mostly family members, selected people enter this area. Often whispers take the place of loud words Not many words are used

PERSONAL SPACE LANGUAGE


18 inches to 4 feet For normal conversation with close friends Communication is mostly personal but relaxed and casual in nature Important decisions are taken in this circle

SOCIAL SPACE LANGUAGE


4 to 12 feet For conversation among Business acquaintances Mostly used for formal purposes, of paramount importance in business

PUBLIC SPACE LANGUAGE


12 feet to as far as we can see and hear For Public Speaking Need to raise our voice Communication becomes even more formal

Time, Color, Layout & Design


We communicate what time mean to us? North Americans are quite time conscious while people in east are quite relaxed about time. Different color are associated with different behavior patterns, attitudes and cultural background.
