WRITING SUMMARIES

Summaries require a special kind of writing. A good summary

gives only main ideas. It does not include details. Before
you begin to write a summary, you need to read the article or
story several times to make sure you
understand it completely.
WRITING SUMMARIES

The hardest part of writing a summary is deciding what to

include and what to leave out. It will help if you think about
answering the questions Who?, When?, Where?, Why?,
What?, and How? in your summary. Remember to include
only the author's opinions and ideas, not your own opinions.
But remember to use your own words. If you use the author's
words, you need to put them in quotations.
WRITER'S TIP: Steps in Writing a Summary

Follow these steps to write a summary:

1. Read the article once for the main idea.

2. Reread the article and underline the main points.

3. Write the first draft of your summary. Include the following

GRAMMAR FOR WRITING: AGREEMENT OF SUBJECTS AND VERBS

Every English sentence must have a subject and a verb. In

order for a sentence to be grammatically correct, the subject
and verb must agree with each other in number. This means
that when the subject is singular, the verb must be singular.
When the subject is plural, the verb must be plural.
