Lesson 3differentiating Expression From Equation

The document discusses the differences between expressions and equations. An expression is a combination of numbers and variables using mathematical operations without an equal sign, while an equation is a mathematical sentence with an equal sign placing two expressions in balance. The document provides examples and definitions of expressions and equations as well as their components like variables, constants, coefficients and terms.

Expression from
Equation
EXPRESSION
 is a combination of numbers and variables
combined by mathematical operations or
symbols.
8+7 2b×9
20÷5×12 8y-5
10+3×4 2n-6
 EXPRESSION has no equal sign. There is no
definite answer and cannot end up displaying
the value of variables involved.

●Coefficient ●Term
Parts of Expression
Variable
 is any letter or symbols that represents
an unknown value.
Coefficient
 is a constant value used with a variable.
Constant
 is a fixed value that does not change.

Term
 is a number or variable. A product or
quotient of a number and variables
separated by plus or minus sign.
3x + 4x - 12
2
2x + 4y - 9
1

3x + 5y - 2

2
9x + 8
EQUATION
 is a mathematical sentence formed by placing
an equal sign (=) between two expressions.

2n-6=4
2+(2×5) =12
3y=15
10+7-2(3) =11
45+5=50
Evaluation: A
I. Direction: Determine whether each one is an
expression or an equation. Write your answer on
each respective container.
(4×10) ÷ 5 293 ÷ 0.5 - 281 (44 + 4) +1
7+(6×3) = 25 150-85=65 91÷13=4+3 (2x50) – 22 = 78
30 + 92 (3×25)-5 80-(20+5)

EXPRESSION EQUATION

Evaluation: B
Identification:
1.a constant value used with a variable.
2.a number or variable. A product or quotient of a
number and variables separated by plus or minus
sign.
3.any letter or symbols that represent the letter.
4.a fixed value that does not change.
5.- 7. (Give three examples of EXPRESSION)
