2 Chapter Lesson 2 Multiplication of Whole Number

The document discusses multiplication, including multiplying whole numbers, properties of multiplication, and exponents. It provides examples of multiplying multiple multi-digit numbers, calculating savings over time, and using exponents. Learners should be able to multiply numbers up to four digits with and without regrouping and perform multiplication properly.

Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learner

should be able to:

 Multiply numbers up to four – digit

numbers without and with regrouping;

 Perform the mathematical operation properly.

Multiplication
It is combining a certain number of
groups with the same number of
members. It can be represented using
groups, arrays, and repeated addition
sentence.
Groups
Example:
4 groups of 5 stars is equal to 20
Arrays
Example: 4 groups of 5 stars is equal to 20
Repeated Addition
Example:
4 groups of 5 stars is equal to 20

5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20
All of these means 4 x 5 = 20
Factors Product
Factors
This are the numbers you multiplied.
Product
This is the answer to multiplication operation.
Properties of Multiplication
Commutative Property of Multiplication
Changing the order of the factors does
not change the product.
Examples:
4 x 9 = 36
9 x 4 = 36
Associative Property of Multiplication
Changing the grouping of the factors
does not affect the product.
Examples:
(5 x 2) x 3 = 30

5 x (2 x 3) = 30
Identity Property of Multiplication
Multiplying a number by 1 will give the
same number.
Examples: 100 x 1 = 100

1 026 x 1 = 1 026
Zero Property of Multiplication
Any number multiplied by 0 is equal to 0.
Examples:
266 x 0 = 0

1 598 x 0 = 0
Distributive Property of Multiplication
When addition / subtraction and multiplication
are both involved in a problem, you can get the
answer in two ways:
1. Multiply the number to the sum of two
addends.
2. Multiply the number to each of the addends.
Then get the sum of the products.
1. Multiply the number to the sum of two
addends.
Example:
9 x (4 + 8)

9 x 12 = 108
1. Multiply the number to the sum of two
addends.
Example:
(4 + 5) x 2

9 x 2 = 18
2. Multiply the number to each of the addends.
Then get the sum of the products.
Example:
9 𝑥 ( 4+ 8)

(9 𝑥 4) + (9 𝑥 8)

36 + 72 = 108
2. Multiply the number to each of the addends.
Then get the sum of the products.
Example:
( 4+ 5) 𝑥2
( 4 𝑥 2) + (5 𝑥 2)

8 + 10 = 18
Multiplication of Whole Numbers
Example:
Improper disposal of plastic is one of the
leading causes of water pollution. It takes a
thousand years before a piece of plastic
decomposes. We have to be responsible in
using and disposing of plastics.
The members of Santos family use
plastic bags whenever they buy from
stores. On average, they use 6 plastic
bags a day. How many plastic bags
are they able to use in a month?
Solution:
Consider that there are about 30 days in a
month. To know how many plastic bags the
members of the Santos family use, multiply 30
days to 6 members of the family.

The member of the Santos family use 180
plastic bags in a month.
Example:
Every month Anna saves ₱350. How
much can she save after a year?
Solution:
There are 12 months in a year. So ₱350
should be multiplied by 12.

Exponents
Exponents is used when you multiply a
number by itself several times. It helps
shorten the multiplication sentence.
