Ethical issues in Computing

What is Ethics?

Ethics is a set of
moral principals
that govern the
behaviour of a
group or
individual.
In the field of Information
Technology(IT), ethical
responsibilities are
known as computer
ethics which regulate the
use of computers.
Some of the following ethical values are necessary to
foster good relations with the concerned people, which
will help to make a healthy environment.

Intellectual Property
Right
Intellectual property means the
“ownership of ideas” which is
created by using the skills and mental
ability of a person. The development
of a software mainly requires the
mental ability of creating first-hand
knowledge, which is unique. The
software/program that is originally
developed by the person, becomes
the intellectual property of the
developers.
Intellectual software has the following properties:

Software Patents: The patent right is given to a programmer for inventing

a particular software. Patent law’s can be used to restrict the freedom of
copying, use, distribution and modification of published information.

Software Copyright: Copyright prohibits the users of a software program

from making copies without the permission of the person/company
concerned which issues the license for thew program.

Trademark: Trademark is an identity top preserve a software. Sometimes,

a trademark becomes such a success that it is actually worth more than
the product.
Hacking
What is Hacking
The word 'Hacking originally refers to an act which
requires great skill and knowledge of computer systems.
Unfortunately, these skills are applied in illegal
activities viz. breaking passwords, releasing viruses
to corrupt the computer systems or stealing valuable
data and information. In fact, it is a technique by
which some computer experts can access the data from
confidential areas of the system. Many of these
activities require a certain amount of skill and
knowledge and hence, are often done by intelligent
professionals.
Thus, Hacking can be defined as an attempt to exploit a computer system. It mainly involves
unauthorised access viz. fraud, stealing personal data over a computer and
its net working security system.
The people who are involved in these crimes are called hackers. A large number of hackers run
publicly available programs that automate attempts to break into systems. Hackers also merge wrong
information, viruses or corrupt data in the users' data and thus, corrupt the computer systems.
Reasons for Hacking
It is very difficult to know the reasons behind hacking. Every individual has his/her own opinion.
However, some of the reasons are given below:
• Theft of services: It may be taken as a challenge to avail the services provided by the system
without being acknowledged.
To take valuable files: Sometimes, people have a tendency to steal secret information and promote
computer terrorism.
• Thrill and excitement: People think that it is exciting to be a part of the world of computer crimes.
• Disease: Some people are
psychologically disturbed and want
to apply their intelligence in anti-
social activities. They are unable to
judge the consequences of their
immoral activities.
For knowledge and experiment:
Sometimes, people want to make
destructive work as a tool for
gaining knowledge and doing
experiments.
In fact, hackers are intellectuals
but their activities are destructive
in nature.
