LESSON 4: LAYERS AND LAYER
MANAGEMENT
OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, you will understand


the concept of layers in Photoshop and be
able to manage them effectively.

LAYERS IN PHOTOSHOP
• Definition: Layers are like transparent sheets stacked on top of each
other, each containing different elements of an image.
• Importance: They allow for non-destructive editing, enabling changes
to specific parts of an image without affecting the rest.
LAYER BASICS
• Creating a New Layer: Use the "New Layer" button at the bottom of
the Layers Panel.
• Deleting a Layer: Select the layer and press "Delete" or use the "Delete
Layer" button.
• Renaming a Layer: Double-click on the layer name to edit.
LAYER VISIBILITY AND OPACITY
• Visibility: Toggle the eye icon next to a layer to make it visible or
invisible.
• Opacity: Adjust the opacity slider to make a layer more or less
transparent.
LAYER STYLES
• Effects: Layer styles add effects like shadows, glows, and strokes to a
layer.
• Applying Styles: Use the "Layer Styles" button at the bottom of the
Layers Panel.
LAYER ORDER
• Arranging Layers: Change the order of layers by dragging them up or
down in the Layers Panel.
• Layer Mask: Add a layer mask to hide or reveal parts of a layer without
deleting.
HANDS-ON PRACTICE
• Open an image in Photoshop and practice
using the different layer commands found on
Photoshop.
• Experiment with layer effects, generative fill,
add, delete, renaming a layer.
