OBJECTIVE:

Illustrates and graphs linear inequalities in two variables

Arlyn Laurilla-Esber
LINEAR INEQUALITIES
• A linear inequality in two variables can be written in any
one of these forms:
 Ax + By < C
 Ax + By > C
 Ax + By ≤ C
 Ax + By ≥ C
• An ordered pair (x, y) is a solution of the linear inequality if
the inequality is TRUE when x and y are substituted into the
inequality.
EXAMPLE 1
• Which ordered pair is a solution of
5x - 2y ≤ 6? A
A. (0, -3) (0, -3) (5, 5) (1, -2) (3, 3)
5(0) – 2(-3) ≤ 6 5(5) – 2(5) ≤ 6 5(1) – 2(-2) ≤ 6 5(3) – 2(3) ≤ 6
B. (5, 5) 0+6 ≤6 25 – 10 ≤ 6 5+4 ≤6 15 – 6 ≤ 6
6 ≤ 6 15 ≤ 6 9 ≤ 6 9 ≤ 6
C. (1, -2) True False False False
D. (3, 3)
Example 2
 Which ordered pair is a solution of
3x + y > 2 ? B and D
A. (0, 0) (0, 0) (1, 2) (-3, 2) (3, -3)

B. (1, 2) 3(0) + (0) > 2

0+0>2
3(1) + (2) > 2
3+2>2
3(-3) + (2) > 2
-9 + 2 > 2
3(3) + (-3) > 2
9–3>2
C.(-3, 2) 0>2
False
5>2

-7 > 2

6>2

D.(3, -3)
GRAPHING LINEAR
INEQUALITIES
• The graph of a linear inequality is the set of all
points in a coordinate plane that represent
solutions of the inequality.
• We represent the boundary line of the inequality by
drawing the function represented in the inequality.
GRAPHING LINEAR INEQUALITIES
The boundary line will be a:
• Solid line when ≤ and ≥ are used.
• Dashed line when < and > are used.
Our graph will be shaded on one side of the
boundary line to show where the solutions of the
inequality are located.
EXAMPLE
1
Graph the inequality x ≤ 4.

Set and plot x = 4.

• Decide whether to
use a solid or
dashed line.
 Shade where the
solutions will be.
Example 2
 Graph y > 3

Set and plot y = 3

 Sketch the boundary
line of the graph.
 Solid or dashed
line?
 Shade where the
solutions are.
EXAMPLE  Solutions:
(1, -5)
3• Graph 3x - 4y > 12.

 (-1, -6)
 (5, 0)
 Sketch the boundary line of the
graph.
 Find the x- and y-intercepts and plot
them.
 (4, 0)
 (0, -3)
 Solid or dashed line?
 Use (0, 0) as a test point.
3(0) – 4(0) > 12 False
 Shade where the solutions are.
Example  Graph 3x + 4y > 8
• Sketch the boundary line of the
graph.
 Use Slope-Intercept form

3x + 4y = 8

b = 2 or (0, 2)
m=

• Solid or dashed line?

•. Solutions:

Use (0, 0) as a test point.
 (0, 4)
3(0) + 4(0) > 8 False  (2, 2)
• Shade where the solutions are.  (5, 0)
Example 

Solutions:
(0, -3)
 Graph y ≤ 2x - 3  (2, -4)
• Sketch the boundary line of the  (4, 2)
graph.
 Use Slope-Intercept form
y = 2x - 3
b = -3 (0, -3)
m=2
• Solid or dashed line
• Use (0, 0) as a test point.
