Steps in Research

This document outlines the 7 major steps in a research process: 1) defining the research problem, 2) reviewing literature, 3) formulating a hypothesis, 4) preparing a research design, 5) collecting data, 6) analyzing data, and 7) interpreting results and writing a report. It provides details about each step.

What is Research?

 Systematic search for knowledge

through method of study,
observation, comparison and
experiment
Major Steps in a Research

There are 7 steps in a research process,

1. Define research problem
2. Review of literature
3. Formulation of hypothesis
4. Preparation of the research design
5. Data collection
6. Data analysis
7. Interpretation of results and report writing
Step – 1: Define the Research Problem

 A research problem is a specific issue or

gap in existing knowledge that you aim to
address in your research.
 It should be focused.
 For example: the effects of long-term
Vitamin D deficiency on cardiovascular
health are not well understood.
Step – 2: Review of Literature

 A literature review is an overview of the

previously published works on a topic.
 The purpose of literature review is to
collect relevant data of the research.
Step – 3: Formulation of Hypothesis

 A research hypothesis is a
statement of expectation or
prediction that will be tested
by research.

 The purpose of hypothesis is

to provide an answer to the
research question.
Step – 4: Preparation of the Research Design

 Research design is the

framework of research methods
and techniques chosen by a
researcher to conduct a study.
 A research design can be
experimental, correlational,
survey, case study, or
ethnographic, based on the
research questions and
objectives.
Step – 5: Data Collection

 Research Data collection is the

process of gathering and measuring
information on variables of interest.
 Primary data can be collected by:
 Direct observation
 Interviews
 Questionnaires and surveys
 Focus groups
Step – 6: Data Analysis

 Data analysis is the most crucial

part of any research.
 Data analysis summarizes the
collected data.
 Data can be analyzed through
statistical methods.
Step – 7: Interpretation and Report Writing

 Interpretation refers to the process

of making sense of numerical data.
 As the final step, the researcher has
to prepare the report of what has
been done.
 A research report should be concise
and clear.
Conclusion

 In conclusion,
 Research means search for knowledge through systematic
ways.
 There are 7 steps in conducting a research and a researcher
should carefully follow the steps to carry out a research.
