Free Fall
Free Fall
c. A person diving
off a cliff
Determine whether these are in free fall or not.
d. A person descending
to the ground with a
parachute.
Determine whether these are in free fall or not.
e. A child going
down in a slide
Describe the motion of the
object, specifically velocity, as
it falls.
Free Fall
- Upward direction is
considered (+)
- Downward direction is
considered (-)
The Motion of Falling Objects
• Remember:
In free fall, all objects
accelerate at the same rate,
regardless of their mass.
Terminal Velocity
• Referred to as the velocity of a
falling object when the force of
gravity and the force of air
resistance acting upon it become
equal.
Terminal Velocity
• No longer experiencing
acceleration
• Constant speed
• Downward direction
using the following equation.
•
Example:
• During a vacation in their province, Jun was challenged to dive from a cliff.
Starting from rest, he jumped off a cliff that is 7.0 m above the water. Solve
the following:
1. How long would it take Jun to reach the water?
2. How fast would his velocity be before reaching the water if the effect of air
resistance is neglected.
Solution:
t = 1.20 s
Find: Time and Final Velocity
Solution:
vf= vi + Agt
vf = 0 m/s + (-9.8 m/s2 )(1.20 s)
vf = - 11.76 m/s
Jun would take 1.20 s to reach the water. The velocity of his
downward motion is 11.76 m/s.
Given:
ag = -9.8 m/s2
assume vi = 0 m/s
t = 2.6 s
Find:
vf = ?
h= ?
