Paraphrasing:

What is paraphrasing?
• Formulating someone else’s ideas in your own
words.
• Rewrite the text or idea in your own words.
Paraphrasing is demonstrating your
understanding of the texts you are reading by
writing them in your own words.
What does paraphrasing mean?
• A restatement
• The same or different length as original
• Written with different words
• Reader-friendly
• Often reorganized
Why paraphrase?
• Quotes should be used rarely
• Then paper will sound like you
• It proves a level of understanding
• Avoid plagiarism without over-quoting
• Force yourself to fully comprehend the
material being paraphrased
What does correct paraphrasing look like?

• Sentence structure must change


• Wording must change
• The only way to accomplish this is by reading,
understanding and restating un your own
words.
Devices used for paraphrasing:
• Change Sentence structure
• Use Synonyms
• Use connectors like however, although,
whenever etc.
For effective paraphrasing it is important to:

• Read first for understanding


• Summarise the key points
• Re-write the statement in your own words
• Place in quotation marks any phrases used
from the original source
• Include the appropriate citation
Paraphrasing techniques
• Change to synonyms
• Change to word forms
• Change from a clause to a phrase
• Change from Quoted speech to Indirect speech
• Change from active voice to passive voice
• Interpret meaning. Identify the underlying
meaning of a statement
• Change transitions
Change to synonyms:
• Replace the original words with words that
mean the same.

• Example:
• The stallion was content with the mare.
• The stallion was happy with the mare.
When you cant find a synonym:
• Replace the original word with a definition

• Example
• The stallion was content with the mare.
• The male horse was happy with the female
horse.
Change word forms:
• Use an adverb instead of an adjective.
• Use a verb to replace a noun.

Example
• Ali is an accurate typist.
• Ali types accutarely.
Change from a clause to a phrase:
• After he ate lunch, Ali took a nap.
• After eating lunch, Ali took a nap.

• The house that is across the street is old.


• The house across the street is old.
Change from quoted speech to indirect
speech:

• Mrs. Sana, “I am ready for lunch.”


• Mrs. Said that she was ready for lunch.
Change from active to passive voice:

• A hotel employee will carry your bags.


• Your bags will be carried by the hotel
employee.
OR
Replace with synonyms also.
• Your luggage will be picked up by a bell boy.
Interpret meaning. Identify the underlying
meaning of a statement:

• Ali, “I am hungry for lunch.”


• Ali complained about being hungry.
Change transitions:
• Transitions are words or phrases
(furthermore, for
example, nevertheless, indeed) that indicate
how a statement in one sentence relates to a
statement that precedes or follows.
• Transition words are most effective when they
are placed at the beginnings of sentences
(although they can also be used in the middle
or at the end).
Change transitions:

• Although it was raining, Ali walked to work


• It was raining, but Ali walked to work.
• It was raining, however, Ali walked to work.
