Nanotechnology

The document discusses nanotechnology and nanomaterials. It defines nano as measuring units equal to one billionth of a meter and discusses the history and origins of the term nano. It also defines nanoscale dimensions and nanotechnology as the science concerned with studying and processing matter at the atomic and molecular scale to create new technology measured in nanometers.

What is Nano?
• Nano are measuring unit for tiny materials that are equal to
10⁻⁹ of a meter or a billionth of a meter, not just invisible to
the eyes.

• The origin of the word nano is derived from the Greek word
nanos which means dwarf or every small thing.
History of Nano

• Can we control the atom?
• Can we make anything with atom?

There’s plenty of Room in the Bottom

• Nanoscale is a scale whose dimensions range from 1
nanometer to 100 nm

• Nanotechnology It is the science that is concerned with the

study and processing of matter on the atomic and molecular
scale to create new technology and means whose dimensions
are measured in nanometers.
Nanomaterials
• Materials possessing, at minimum, one external
dimension measuring 1-100nm.
• The difference in Nanomaterials properties is due to:
The effect of surface area.
The effect of quantum mechanics.
Nanomaterials VS. Bulk materials
