Define Short Story.
Characteristics of Short Story:
• A short story is a fictional prose narrative that can be read in one
sitting.
• It is shorter and more limited than a novel, usually between 5 and 15
pages long but can be shorter.
• Author’s purpose is to entertain.

• Usually concerned with not more than a few effects, problems and
themes.
• It emphasizes human nature and human values. Usually focuses on one
important event in the lives of a small number of central characters.

Read “The Necklace” by Guy de
Maupassant’s for 10 minutes.
From the story, identify the
