Direct Shear Test Presentation

The direct shear test aims to determine the shear strength of soil by applying shear stress to a soil sample in a direct shear box apparatus. The test is commonly used and simple to perform on both undisturbed and remolded soil samples. It provides values for parameters like cohesion and the angle of internal friction that are important for analyzing problems involving soil shear strength in geotechnical engineering applications.

2
• The Direct Shear Test is an experimental
procedure conducted in geotechnical
engineering practice and research that aims to
determine the shear strength of soil materials.
Introduction
• The Direct Shear Test is considered one of the
most common and simple tests to derive the
strength of a soil and can be performed on
undisturbed or remolded samples.

3
Shear Strength of
soil

• The shear strength of soil determines

its resistance to deformation by shear
stress.
• Soil that has greater shear strength
will have more cohesion between
particles, and more friction or
interlocking to prevent particles
sliding over each other.

4
Shear Strength of Soil

• The strength of a material is the

greatest stress it can sustain.
• The safety of any geotechnical
structure is dependent on the strength
of the soil.
• If the soil fails, the structure founded on
it can collapse.

5
Significance of shear strength

• Engineers must understand the nature of shearing resistance

• To analyze soil stability problems such as:
• Bearing capacity
• Slope stability
• Lateral earth pressure on earth-retaining structures
• Pavement
6
• The laboratory report cover the laboratory
procedures for determining these values for
cohesionless soils.

Objective • Engineering problems such as design of foundation,

retaining walls, slab bridg es, sheet piling, the value
of the angle of internal friction and cohesion of the
soil involved are required for the design.

Application In Geotechnical Engineering

• Soil Shear Strength Analysis

• Foundation Design
• Slope Stability Analysis
• Earth Retaining Structures
• Geotechnical Research
14
Advantage Disadvantage
• Simplicity and Speed • Drainage Control Difficulty
• Versatility • Complex Stress Conditions
• Cost-Effective • Predetermined Shear Plane
• Ease of Sample Preparation • Lateral Restraint Effect
• Neglects Pore Water Pressure

15
Conclusion
• The conclusion is that the symmetrical direct shear test is an effective
method for the measurement of the plane strain and direct shear angles of
friction for sand and the angle of dilation, at the density and stress level
tested.
