Ten characteristics of an emotionally
intelligent person
Empathy
- is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is
experiencing from within their frame of reference.
- Greater Good Science Center in UC Berkeley laid down
two different types of Empathy, namely:
A. Affective Empathy
B. Cognitive Empathy
In a busy office, a manager noticed a colleague struggling to meet a
deadline. Recalling times when they felt overwhelmed, the manager
approached with understanding, offering to help lighten the workload
and suggesting effective time management strategies based on their
own experiences. This act of recognizing their own past challenges
allowed the manager to provide practical support and encouragement,
easing the colleague's stress and fostering a sense of teamwork.
Self - Awareness
Curiosity
- It is the willingness to learn and improve.
When one is curious, he/she is passionate
and therefore, he/she is driven to be at
his/her best.
Analytical Mind
- It pertains to be critical thinker that
analyzes and processes all new
information that comes his/her way and
see if they can extract ways to improve.
Belief
- It is the power of believing in one's self, both at
present and the future. It is a matter of affirming
that people and things in one's life happen for a
reason and that everything will ultimately turn out
to be good.
At a birthday party, a person notices their friend admiring a book displayed on the shelf,
so they discretly jot down the title to consider it as a future gift. While shopping with
their sibling, they remember them mentioning they needed new headphones, so they
suggest checking out the electronics section together. When planning a weekend getaway
with friends, they suggest activities that align with everyone's interests and preferences,
ensuring everyone has a good time. During a group project at work, they notice a
colleague struggling with a particular task, so they offer assistance without hesitation,
understanding their need for support. Their attentiveness to others' wants and needs
fosters stronger connections and contributes to a harmonious environment in various
situations.
Optimism
Adaptability
- It is an important recognition and the ability
to make or remake decisions in one's best
interest. It is also determining when to continue
his/her course, or when is the time for a
change.
A student notices a classmate struggling with a difficult concept and offers to study
together to help them grasp the material. They patiently explain the concepts in a
clear and understandable way, ensuring their classmate feels supported and
encouraged. During group projects, they actively contribute ideas and listen to their
teammates' suggestions, aiming to create a collaborative and productive
environment. When a friend expresses uncertainty about their career path, they offer
to brainstorm ideas and provide guidance based on their own experiences. Their
willingness to go the extra mile to support others demonstrates their genuine desire
to see those around them succeed.
