Strategies for Effective

Interpersonal Communication
Objectives:

communication.

communication.

Intrapersonal vs Interpersonal

Interpersonal - is involving several people. Relating to


relationships or communication between people.
Intrapersonal - is communication with oneself or self- to-to
self communication
What is Interpersonal Communication?
Interpersonal communication
Is the process of exchange of information, ideas, and feelings
between two or more people through verbal or non-verbal
methods.

It often includes face-to-face exchange of information in a


form of voice, facial expressions, body language, and gestures.
Determine what is being describe using the jumbled

Methods of Interpersonal
Communication
1.Verbal communication - the most common method of
communication. It is a communication method that is
exchanged verbally by speaking words or making
patterns of sounds.

Examples:
• Phone calls
• Video calls
• Face-to-face communication
2. Non- verbal communication - is where
information is transmitted using gesture, postures,
and facial expressions.
An individual can convey information using
visual cues like body, language, eye contact etc.
3. Written communication- is a method of
communication use to disseminate
information in the form of words or symbols.
4. Visual communication - makes use of
signs, drawings, illustrations, graphics,
pictures , etc to transmit information or
messages.
Communication Strategies
1.Nomination- collaboratively and productively
establish a topic.
2.Restriction- limitation you may have as a
speaker.
3.Turn taking- process by which people decides
who takes the conversational floor.
4. Topic control- covers how procedural formality or
informality affects the development of topic in
conversation.

5. Topic Shifting- moving one topic to another.

6. Repair- how sepakers address the problems in


speaking.

7. Termination- refers to conversations that ends a


topic.
Practical Communication Strategies
• Encourage one-on-one communication
• Let everyone speak in meetings
• Make use of multiple modes of communication
• Bring in some humor
• Prepare yourself beforehand
• Promote feedback
• Be ready to involve yourself in difficult
conversation
• Jot down key points
• Make use of communication tools
