Module 1 Lesson 5
Comparison and Contrast
★It is where the similarities and differences of two or
more things are explored.
★Comparison in writing discusses elements that are
similar.
★Contrast in writing discusses elements or ideas that are
different.
Example:
★The dog is brown, and the cat is white.
★Math class focuses on numbers and equations
while English class works on letters and words.
★The snow is cold, but the sun is hot.
★Comparison attempts to help the reader
understand a new concept by likening it to one
that the reader already knows. Contrast may be
used to explain how the new concept is different
from the old one, how it has its own identity.
★A compare-and-contrast essay, then analyzes two
subjects comparing them, contrasting them, or both.
However, its purpose is not to simply state the obvious
but rather to illustrate subtle differences or unexpected
similarities between two subjects.
★As a writer, you should help the readers see how these
two ideas are similar or different by showing them its
advantages and disadvantages so they are able to weigh
the pros and cons before they make judgment or
decision. Take a look at this example.
Example
★ My sisters are as different as yin and yang in terms of personality, appearance and
intelligence. Tina, the middle child in the family, prefers staying at home than going
out with her friends. She is slim, petite and has dark skin. As she is not sociable, she
finds friends with the characters from the books she reads most of the time. In
addition, she is very clever in subjects like Math and Science which made her
graduate with Highest Honors from Senior High School. In contrast, my youngest
sister, Joni, is the opposite. She has an outgoing and friendly personality. There is
never a dull moment as she is always ready with stories to tell. She is tall with a
round plump face and fair skin. Being the youngest in the family, she is often asked
to perform during family gatherings since she sings and dances well. My sisters may
be different from each other but they adore one another.
★There are two common ways to organize
comparison/contrast paragraph or essay. It
is the Block Method and Point-by-point
Method.
Block Method
★A way to compare and contrast two subjects.
★One subject is completely compared and
contrasted before moving on to the next subject.
Example:
★A fish has scales, and able to swim in salt or fresh
water. They also have gills which are used to help them
receive oxygen.
★A mammal can live on land or in water. They have
lungs to help them breathe, and they have skin or fur.
Point-by-point Method
★A method used to compare and contrast two
subjects.
★The two subjects focus on specific points to
compare to each other at one time.
Example:
★Fish live in salt or fresh water, while mammals can live
on land or in water. Fish have gills to take in oxygen,
but mammals have lungs to receive oxygen in the body.
Fish, also, have scales while mammals have skin or fur.
