The proper application and selection of pumps for installation and
operation in a piping system is one of the most crucial choices a power plant
system designer must make. As was previously mentioned, choosing a pump can
be challenging due to the wide variety of sizes, types, classes, and
configurations available. In addition to the enormous number of pumps the
designer, the design must also consider the hydraulics system, plant economics,
the space and maintenance needs of the plants, structural support,
electrical/control requirements, noise, vibration, and, finally, the acquisition and
installation of the pumps.

1. Determine the need for pumping.

5. Determine the pump materials of construction
- It is advised to consult the pump's manufacturer or other users during this
phase. The manufacturer can supply highly important information regarding the
construction materials available and suggested for an application using the
information determined in the preceding processes. The manufacturer may share
recent knowledge of a material choice in related applications. The pump maker can
provide information on material costs, material durability, production expertise, and
expected service life. To choose the right building materials, designers may also
depend on their own experience or the experience of the end user or operator.

6. Determine the pump trim/construction requirements

the various factors the designer must decide, such as the type of pump, the impeller
design, the type of shaft seal, shaft sleeves, bearings, couplings, and other accessories

designer's background, and consider user and operator preferences.

7. Determine the pump driver arrangement.

9. Select and prequalify pump manufacturers for bidding.

prequalified pump manufacturers as available for tendering. Depending on the complexity of

10. Receive and evaluate pump proposals.

accepted. An examination of competing bids for the specified pumps constitutes a bid
analysis, and the winning proposal or bidder is typically recommended. The proposal price,
payment terms, general conditions (including legal issues), delivery of equipment,
escalation, user/operator allowance for funds (cost of money) during equipment installation
and plant construction (AFUDC), differential operating costs, and cost of electrical/fuel
power losses are all things that need to be taken into account when analyzing bids. The pump
proposals' annual running expenses are typically stated as capital equivalent costs. In some
circumstances, the specification will include the equivalent capital cost of power or fuel
losses that will be considered in the proposal evaluation, for instance, dollars per foot of
head of pumping power.
