DEPARTMENT OF BASIC SCIENCE
SUBJECT:- introduction to basic electrical
science Topic:- Electric shock -: Team members Bajarang sing Koushik M Amith C Patil Nikhileshwar N Nihar T N Electric Shock •An electric shock happens when an electric current passes through your body. This can burn both internal and external tissue and cause organ damage. •A range of things can cause an electric shock, including: •power lines •lightning •electric machinery •household appliances •electrical outlets • While shocks from household appliances are usually less severe, they can quickly become more serious if a child chews on an electric cord or puts their mouth on an outlet. Electric Shock •Aside from the source of the shock, several other factors affect how serious an electric shock is, including. •voltage •length of time in contact with the source •overall health •electricity’s path through your body •type of current (an alternating current is often more harmful than a direct current because it causes muscle spasms that make it harder to drop the source of electricity) Factors affecting severity of the shock •Magnitude of current through the body •Path of the current through the body •Time for which current is passed through the body •Frequency of the current •Physical and psychological condition of the Person symptoms of an electric shock •loss of consciousness •muscle spasms •numbness or tingling •breathing problems •headache •problems with vision or hearing •burns •seizures •irregular heart beat First aid/shock-treatment 1. Do not panic 2. Let go of the electric source as soon as you can. 3. If you can, call 911 or local emergency services. If you can’t, yell for someone else around you to call. 4. Don’t move, unless you need to move away from the electric source. 5. Lay the Person Down, if Possible Elevate the person's feet 6. Call the doctor immediately 7. Start giving artificial respiration. 8. Never give give anything to eat or drink. 9. Do not make crowd Safety precautions against electric shock 1. Avoid water at all times when working with electricity. Never touch or try repairing any electrical equipment or circuits with wet hands. It increases the conductivity of electric current.
2. Insulation of the conductors used must be proper and in good
condition.
3. Insulation resistance should be measured before on the new
wiring. 4.Earth connection should be always maintained in proper condition. 5.Make the main supply switch off and remove the fuses before starting work with any installation 6.Fuses must have correct ratings 7.Use rubber soled shoes 8.Always use insulated Screw driver, cutting player, testers etc. 9.The sockets should be fixed at a height beyond the reach of children. 10.Never remove the plug by pulling the wires connected to it. 11.Use line tester to check whether live terminal carries any Current 12.Never touch two terminals at the same time 13. Never use an Aluminium or steel ladder if you are working on any receptacle at height in your home. An electrical surge will ground you and the whole electric current will pass through your body. Use a bamboo, wooden or a Fibre glass ladder instead. 14.Always use appropriate insulated rubber gloves and goggles while working on any branch circuit or any other electrical circuit. 15.Always put a cap on the hot/live wire while working on an electric board or service panel as you could end up short circuiting the bare ends of the live wire with the neutral. The cap insulates the copper ends of the cable thus preventing any kind of shock even if touched mistakenly. Thank you
