HOW TO LEAD A CONNECT

GROUP?
"I GROW in leading a connect group"

- OBJECTIVES –

At the end of the lesson, the participant should be able to:


1. Discuss the basic steps in moderating a small group discussion.
2. Apply the principle in moderating a small group discussion.
3. Appreciate the method of facilitation.

Start by having the participant think back to times wherein they were the listeners and
somebody is leading. For example, when students are listening to their teachers
discuss a topic; when they are participants in a symposium; when they are a member
of a group wherein the leader discusses what they will do.

Ask the following questions:


1. Ask them to think of a particular situation wherein they find the topic being
discussed or talked boring or interesting. Give one situation each.

2. Why did they find it boring or interesting? What did the moderator do?

I Knowing your topic

The first thing that the moderator should learn is the mastery of the topic. He
should come prepared and anticipate what the audience expects to get out of
the discussion prior to the session.

It is important that he understands the method of inductive Bible study.

II The art of asking good questions

In facilitating a group discussion it is important that the moderator should learn


the art of turning statements into questions. There are times when asking
good questions are usually much more effective than giving advices.

(Do exercises on how to turn statements into questions.)

III Controlling the flow of discussions

Keep the conversations moving from one member to another and allow each
person to express his thoughts on the subject. When one of the members
becomes long-winded, search for a point where you can break into his
insights and re-direct the flow of discussion back to the issue.

IV Involving other members to answer questions

There are instances where questions are unavoidable. As a moderator, your job
is to clarify the questions, allow the group to ponder, and ask other members
in the group whom you think are knowledgeable enough to handle the
questions. If the answer does not satisfy the one who asked, it the moderator
shall immediately recap and modify the answer.

V The art of creativity

Each person learns differently. Some learns through visual while others
through listening. Others learn faster when they are actively participating in a
group, while some learn most under pressure. As a moderator you need to be
creative and use different methods that appeals to the senses. Remember that
your job is to facilitate learning and not to lecture. (Do exercises on
listing down different methods to facilitate learning)

VI Concluding remarks

This is the portion where the moderator will sum up all things and give a
concluding remark that will challenge everybody to apply what has been
discussed by the group. He must see to it that learning will not only touch the
head & the heart, but also the will so that members will have the urgency to act
on it.

VII The art of delegation

Before dismissing the group, the moderator should announce the subject to be
discussed next meeting. It would be great if he can assign the passage in
advance for them to read & study. This would help the group for better
interaction.
