SOLVING QUADRATIC

EQUATIONS BY
QUADRATIC FORMULA
OBJECTIVES:
1. Familiarize what is quadratic formula.
2. Solve quadratic equations by quadratic formula.
Quadratic Formula
Quadratic formula:
Step 1: Determine the value of a, b and c.
Step 2: Substitute it to the quadratic formula.
Step 3: Simplify the value of x.

Examples: Solve each equation by quadratic formula.

c. Simplify for the value of x.

1.) x2 – 10x -11= 0
a. Determine the value of a, b and c. x=
a= 1, b= -10, c= -11
x
b. Substitute it to the quadratic formula.
x= = 11
x
x= = -1
Examples: Solve each equation by quadratic formula.

2.) x2 + 9x + 14 = 0
a= 1, b= 9, c= 14
Quadratic formula:
x

x Therefore the solution is {-2, -7}.

x x= = -2

x= = -7
Examples: Solve each equation by quadratic formula.
3.) 6x2 + 10x = 1
6x2 + 10x – 1 = 0
a= 6, b= 10, c= -1
Quadratic formula:
x

x Therefore the solution is {}.

x x

x x x
4. 2x2 – 8x -18= 0 5. x2 + 5x + 4= 0
a= 2, b= -8, c= -18 a= 1, b=5, c=4

x x

x
x
x= = -1
x
x x= = -4
Practice Exercise # 7:
Directions: Solve the following equation by quadratic formula

1.) 3x2 = – 2x - 7 3.) y2 + 12y + 20= 0

x= x= y = -10 y = -2

2.) x2 + 11x – 12 = 0 4.) 11 + 2c = c2

x = -12 x=1 c=1 c=1

5.) 18y - 2y2 = 0

y=0 y=9
