LECTURE 4 - Firing Order and Interval

The document discusses firing order and firing interval in internal combustion engines. Firing order refers to the sequence that cylinders ignite or inject fuel. Firing interval is the timing between ignition or injection events, calculated as 720 degrees divided by the number of cylinders to evenly space power strokes. Cylinder number determines firing order, which varies with engine configuration.

FIRING ORDER

 What is firing order?

 What is firing interval?
 Do all cylinders have the same firing order?
 Can I distinguish which cylinder is in the suction/
compression/ power/ exhaust event?
Firing order

 The firing order of an internal combustion engine is the

sequence of ignition for the cylinders.

 In a spark ignition engine, the firing order corresponds to

the order in which the spark plugs are operated.

 In a diesel engine, the firing order corresponds to the

order in which fuel is injected into each cylinder.
Firing interval

 This means that the timing of the power stroke is evenly

spaced between cylinders.

 For a four-stroke engine, this requires a firing interval of

720° divided by the number of cylinders, for example a six-
cylinder engine would have a firing interval of 120°.
