ITM111S Unit4 Part 2 QUADRATIC EQUATIONS Notes

The document discusses solving linear inequalities and quadratic equations. It introduces linear inequalities, how to solve them, and how to graph inequality solutions on a number line. It then covers quadratic equations, including how to solve them using the quadratic formula or factorization, and gives some word problems as examples.

UNIT 4 (part 2) :

LINEAR INEQUALITIES AND QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
• Solve linear inequality equations in one unknown variable.
• Graph inequalities on a number line.
• Solve word problems involving inequalities.
• Solve a quadratic equation using the quadratic formula
• Solve a quadratic equation using factorization method
• Write and solve a quadratic equation when given a word problem.
LINEAR INEQUALITY EQUATIONS

Introduction:
 Inequality- is like an equation, but instead of an equal sign it has one of
these symbols.
 An inequality that contains a variable is an algebraic inequality.
UNIT 4  Inequality compares two quantities.
 A number that makes an inequality true is a solution of the inequality.

QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
Introduction:
• A quadratic equation is any second-degree polynomial equation

• A quadratic equation is written in the form

this is also known as standard form.

Solve quadratic equations by factorization:

Answer:
Solution by factorization

• if x(x – 1) = 0, then x = 0 or x – 1 = 0. That is x = 0 or x = 1.

• In general, if (x + a)(x + b)(x – c)(x – d) =0, then (x + a) = 0 or (x + b) = 0 or (x –
c) = 0 or (x – d) = 0. That is x = -a or x = -b or x = c or x = d.
