Theories of Motivation

Maslow's hierarchy of needs

Psychologist Abraham Maslow assumed that people are motivated
by unmet needs. When a person's need for something is not met, the
person feels driven or motivated to meet that need. To give a basic
example, a person who needs food feels hungry and therefore eats
something. According to Maslow's theory, the needs that motivate
:people fall into five basic categories

How nurse managers can motivate

Making work interesting: through-1

have relatively skills.

interesting by adding more duties to it.

C. Job enrichment :is the incorporation of motivating factors

into a job. Herzberg called the factors that enrich a job
''motivators.'' generally, an enriched job gives employees
more responsibility to make decisions and more recognition
for good performance thus, enriched jobs are more

challenging and more rewarding.

How nurse managers can motivate

2-Having high expectations:-

Effective motivation can lead to performance beyond
employees' own expectations of themselves. When someone
expects a lot of us, we often find that we can do a lot. When
little is expected, we tend to provide little. The expectations
are self-fulfilling.
How nurse managers can motivate

-:providing rewards that are valued-3

The manger's challenge is to determine what rewards will

.work for particular employees at particular times

4-Relating rewards to performance:-

The rewards that a manager uses should be linked to

employee performance and achievement of realistic
objectives.

5- Providing feedback:-

People need to know how well they are doing. Part of a

manager's job is to give employees that they are meeting
objectives. When a supervisor tells employees that they
need to improve, most people will try to improve when
given a chance to do so.
Measures facilitate nurse motivation

4- Use a participation style of leader ship
5- Guide ,encourages and support continuously.

what you don't want.
2- Read Success Stories-Being aware of people who have
actually succeeded against difficult opposition will inspire
you to persist in your efforts to overcome whatever
obstacles that you face.

act as a sounding board can boost your confidence and
help you stay clear regarding your progress.

4- Track Your Progress- Keep a journal. Write your successes

and failures down each night. This gives you a different
perspective. You will be able to read your records of events
over a long period of time.

milestones along the way. Go see a movie. Have an extra
dessert. Give yourself a reward after you have done
something productive.
