Essential Question
The folktale Aladdin is familiar to people across the world. Although its origins are
somewhat disputed, it was popularized by the French scholar Antoine Galland
who is famous for his translation of the Arabic manuscript One Thousand and One
Nights which can be traced back to the late 14th Century. The story of Aladdin, is
much more recent. According to Galland, he heard the story from a Syrian man
from Aleppo and later decided to include it in his translation of One Thousand and
One Nights, despite the fact that it was not a part of the original manuscript. The
folktale explores the themes of luck, desire, greed, and obsession. Retold with
myriad variations, it is the story of a poor young man whose life turns from rags to
riches when a magic lamp falls into his hands. But good fortune comes at a cost
and the genie that changes Aladdin’s life is coveted by others.
