Froth Flotation-Basic Principles

The document discusses froth flotation, which is a versatile mineral processing technique used to separate valuable minerals from gangue. It works by attaching valuable minerals to air bubbles in a flotation machine due to differences in surface properties, with the valuable minerals recovered to the concentrate. Key parameters that affect flotation include contact angle, collectors, frothers and pulp chemistry.

Flotation – General introduction
• Most Versatile Mineral Processing technique.
• Originally patented in 1906 ; Permitted Low-Grade and Complex ore
bodies
• Started with: Sulphide ores ( Lead, Zinc, Copper etc. )
• Oxide ores ( Hematite & Cassiterite )
• Oxidized Minerals ( Malachite and Cerrusite )
• Non- Metallic Ores ( Fluorites, Phosphates , Fine Coal )
Flotation Process- Definition & Mechanisms
• Flotation – is a ‘physico-chemical separation’ process that utilises the
differences in surface properties of the valuable minerals and the unwanted
Gangue minerals
• Flotation involves 3 Phases (Solids, Water & Froth ). Hence very Complex
phenomenon- Not completely understood, even today.
• Flotation comprises of 3 Mechanisms:
• ( a ) Selective attachment to “Air Bubbles” generated in the flotation machine
• ( b ) Entrainment in the water which passes through the froth
• ( c ) Physical entrapment between particles in the froth attached to air bubbles
• referred to as “Aggregation”.

• The attachment of Valuable minerals to air bubbles is the most important

mechanism and represents the majority of particles that are recovered to the
“concentrate”
