The document discusses wind, including what causes it and how convection currents create wind near coastal areas. It also covers demonstrating convection using candles and incense, the importance of wind as both a resource and cause of catastrophes like cyclones, and the major uses of wind power.

Wind: A Vital

Resource
A project by Atharv, Ayush and Chinmay
(Roll No. 4-6, IX-D)
What
exactly is
wind, and
how does it
occur?
A quick definition
Wind refers, simply, to the
movement of air; be that an
evening breeze, or a terrible
storm.
What causes wind?
When air is heated, convection currents form
within it. When air particles travel on these
currents, wind occurs.
Coastal Areas: A look into the powers of
convection

In such areas, the air above the land gets heated and
Convection starts rising during the day, creating a low pressure
region over land, but due to slower heating of air
currents: The over the sea, a region of higher pressure there.

propellers of air Wind from the sea moves to occupy the area over
the land, creating a convection current, and wind.

These are mainly due to the fact that when

air is heated, it rises, leading to colder air
filling the gap, and thus, moving air in a
current.
Demonstrating convection
Place a candle in a beaker and light it. Light an
incense.stick and take it to the mouth of the beaker.

● If the stick is kept near the mouth then the smoke is likely
to flow outwards.
● If the stick is kept right above the candle, then the smoke
would rise vertically or follow the direction of any air
currents present in the surrounding environment.
● The direction of smoke in other regions will depend on
factors such as air circulation, temperature gradients, and
the presence of any obstacles.

Air currents caused by uneven heating of air.

Importance
of wind
While wind is an importance resource with
various benefits, it's important to be aware of
and acknowledge its downsides, as it may lead
to catastrophes with horrible loss of life.
One example of this are cyclones, massive
furious wind systems which lead to massive loss
of life and property every year.
The many
uses of wind The major use of wind is wind power,
which simply refers to generating power
through wind. This is a very easy way to
Not only does wind cool you down when
generate electricity, requiring much less
you feel warm, it has many other
benefits. funding than conventional power plants,
while also being less pollution for the
environment. Wind also powers sailboats,
and is the reason behind the functioning of
kites.
Thank you!

Have a Nice Day Ahead! :)
