The document describes a smart street light project that uses LED lights, an infrared sensor, and a microcontroller to automatically control street lights based on detecting vehicle movement. The system aims to save energy by only illuminating lights as needed while still providing safety and security on roads and in parking areas.

INTRODUCTION

• An automatic street light is a system that detects the amount of light in the
surroundings using sensors.
• This system not only saves energy but also ensures that the street lights are
always on when needed, providing safety and security.
• A Street light that automatically switches ON when the night falls and turns
OFF when the sun rises.
• In fact we can use this circuit for implementing any type of automatic night
light.
• The adoption of smart street lights represents a pivotal step towards building
smarter cities.
• They have sensors and technology that help them to adjust their brightness
based on how much light is needed.

4
EXISTING SYSTEM

• High intensity discharge lamp(HID) presently used for

urban street light are based on principle of gas discharge,
thus the intensity is not controllable by any voltage
reduction method as the discharge path is broken.
• More costly.
• Less durability.
• Not very effective during night.
• Consumes more power.
5
PROPOSED System

• Light Emitting Diode(LED) based lamps are soon

replacing the HID lamps in the street.
• As the LED’s can switch faster than HID lamps we can
apply the concept to installation of smart streets.
• LED’s consume less power compared to HID lamps.
• Life time of LED’s is also more.

6
Objectives

• During the night, all the lights on the highway remain ON

for the vehicles, but lots of energy is wasted when there is
no vehicle movement. To promote energy efficiency and
the balanced use of energy resources.
• To encourage energy proficiency and use of new and
renewable energy source in the transport.

WORKING

There are two basic modes of operations:

1. Transition of Streetlights from dark to bright state.
2. Transition of streetlights from dim to bright state.
In the first mode of operation, when the vehicle is not
present, all the streetlights will be in dark state. When a
vehicle is sensed then the window of streetlights is
illuminated in front of the vehicle.

9
SECOND MODE OF OPERATION

In the second mode of operation when the vehicle is not

sensed all the street lights will be in dim state this is
achieved by use of pulse width modulation technique
through the programs stored in the microcontroller

10
IR(INFRARED SENSOR)

• Infrared Sensor is an electronic

instrument.
• It is used to sense certain
characteristics in its surroundings
by emitting infrared radiations
• It is capable of measuring heat
and detection of moving object.
11
LED DRIVER

•An LED driver is a special device used to power LED lights. LEDs (Light Emitting
Diodes) need a specific amount of electricity to work well and last long.

• The LED driver's job is to convert incoming power (from your home or battery) to the
right voltage and current that the LEDs need.

•It acts like a controller, making sure that the LED doesn't get too much or too little
power.

• It's a bit like the caretaker for the LED, ensuring it has everything it needs to shine
brightly and efficiently.

12
PHOTO DIODE

• A photodiode is a type of electronic device that can detect

light.
• The more light that hits the photodiode, the stronger the
current it generates.
• This feature makes photodiodes very useful in various devices
where detecting and measuring light is important, such as in
cameras, solar panels, and safety sensors.

13
VOLTAGE REGULATOR:

• It is a voltage regulator (7805) integrated circuit. It is a member of 78xx

series of fixed linear voltage regulator ICs. The voltage source in a circuit may
have fluctuations and would not give the fixed voltage output.
• The voltage regulator IC maintains the output voltage at a constant value.
The xx in 78xx indicates the fixed output voltage it is designed to provide. It
provides +9V regulated power supply.
• Capacitors of suitable values can be connected at input and output pins
depending upon the respective voltage levels.

14
RESISTOR:

• Resistor is a passive component used to control current in a

circuit.
• Its resistance is given by the ratio of voltage applied across its
terminals to the current passing through it.
• Thus a particular value of resistor, for fixed voltage, limits the
current through it.
• They are omnipresent in electronic circuits.
• Resistors can be either fixed or variable.
• The low power resistors are comparatively smaller in size than
high power resistors. 15
Applications:

• Used in Street light application.

• This idea can be implemented on both
small road and busy highways.
• Can be implemented in parking area.
• Implementable in museum, auditorium.
16
ADVANTAGES:

• Energy Saving
• Low cost
• Safety and Security
• Automated Operation
17
FUTURE SCOPE

• It has a limitation of power

• Complexity in installation and
maintenance
• LED is a low voltage device
18
Conclusion:

• In this project smart street light described that

integrated the new technologies offering ease
of maintenance and energy saving.
• Increases the road safety and gives efficient
way to handle switching on/off the lights
depending upon traffic
