Engineering® INTRODUCTION

● Electric vehicles are propelled by electric motors and uses electrical energy.
● They are eco-friendly, cheaper to run and cheaper to maintain.
● There are three main types of electric vehicles i.e., Battery Electric Vehicle(BEV), Hybrid Electric
Vehicle(HEV) and Fuel-cell Electric Vehicle.
● India still has a long way to go as compared to other countries.
● Electric vehicles are currently capable of about 40 miles to 100 miles of driving in single charge
depending on amount of charge battery can hold.

Need of electric vehicles

● Contributes to cleaner air
● To preserve the fossil fuels
● Less maintenance
● More efficient
● Cost Effective

WIRELESS CHARGING SYSTEM FOR EVs

● Charging system for EVs can be both conductive (wired) and wireless.
● The heavy cable and bulky mechanical plug are needed in the conductive charger.
● In contrast, wireless charger requires no physical contact
which provides safety (from electric shock or spark) and
convenient to the user.
● Furthermore, it is weatherproof, which can be used in hostile
environment.
● Figure 1 shows typical EVs wireless charging system
● Proper alignment of charging coils is important for system efficiency.
