Emotion: a conscious mental reaction accompanied by
physiological and behavioural changes in our body
(Lazarus, 1991)
4 types of emotions:
◦ Resulting from loss, harm, or threats (e.g., fear, anger)
◦ Resulting from benefits (e.g., joy, delight)
◦ Borderline emotions (e.g., hope, compassion)
◦ Complex emotions (e.g., love, grief)

What does the word
stigma mean?
A cluster of negative attitudes
and beliefs that motivates the
general public to fear, reject,
avoid and discriminate against
people with a mental illness
Stigma
The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) reports that “many people living
with mental illness say the stigma they face is often worse than the illness itself”
60% of people with a mental illness wont seek out the help they need due to the stigma
that is associated with being labelled mentally ill
Terms Related to
Stigma
Stereotype – certain attitudes or fixed
impressions about a group of people
Prejudice – a preconceived opinion that
someone has about someone or something
Discrimination – unfavourable treatment based
on prejudice

There are 4 different questions on chart
paper that are taped to the wall in the
corners of this room
Divide yourselves evenly and go to a piece
of chart paper in the room
Read the question, and discuss as a group.
Jot down your groups answers with the
marker
After 5 minutes, we will rotate to a new
corner and question

Misconceptions and beliefs about mental illness:
◦ All individuals are dangerous
◦ Caused by supernatural forces
◦ People should be housed in facilities far away from local communities
◦ Right to vote should be restricted
◦ Access to employment should be limited
◦ Its not really an illness and people are just exaggerating

Disorders and Mental Illnesses
Mental Disorder: Clinically significant behavioural or
psychological syndrome or pattern reflecting an underlying
psychobiological dysfunction
Mental Illness: Reduced ability to function, with dysfunction
and impaired functioning over an extended period.
◦ Symptoms vary from mild to severe, depending on type of mental
illness
Diversity and Mental
Illness
Mental health issues are a growing concern on college and
university campuses; many mental health disorders are
diagnosed in young people
Rates of mental disorders are higher among women than men
in all age groups
Gender minority groups are at risk for mental disorders
Cultural assimilation influences mental health
Homelessness increases the risk of experiencing mental health
issues
Mental Health Disorders – Activity
With the same partner or group of 3 as before, come and grab a CMHA brochure on one of the
following disorders:
Anxiety disorders
Depression and bipolar disorder
Eating disorders
Schizophrenia
Also grab a question sheet. Read through the brochure (also available on Blackboard if you prefer
to read there) and answer all the questions on your sheet related to the disorder that you have
chosen
Hand in your sheet when you are finished.
