Education in the Republic of Ireland

Overview of the
education system
The Irish education system:
• primary school
• post-primary school or secondary school
• further education
• third-level education
State funded education is available at all levels
Pre-school education

The Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)


Scheme
• Children can start ECCE at 2 years and 8 months
• Children transfer to primary school at no older than 5
years and 6 months
• No charge to parents for the playschool or daycare
provided under the ECCE scheme
Primary education
Assessment of children in
primary school

Schools must evaluate students and report the results


of the evaluation to students and their parents.
Standardised tests on English and Mathematics during
primary school:
• At the end of first class or the beginning of second
class;
• At the end of fourth class;
• At the beginning of sixth class.
Post-primary education
• Junior Cycle - age 12 to 15
Examinations: the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement examination at the end of three years
• Senior Cycle - age 15 (or 16 in some cases) to 18
The Senior Cycle can be of two or three years. During the last two years, students take one of
three programmes, leading to a State examination:
 Established Leaving Certificate
 Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme
 Leaving Certificate Applied
 Types of post-primary
schools
● Voluntary secondary schools
● Community colleges
● Community schools

Each school type has a different ownership and


management.

School management boards must include parents


and
teacher representatives.

In the past, the type of school usually determined


whether the school focus was on
academic or vocational achievements.
