GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this class, the students should be able to:

1. Define a manuscript document.

2. Differentiate between the types of headings that


includes; their functions.
3. Recall types of headings that includes; their Word
style, placement and formatting.
WHAT IS A MANUSCRIPT

• A manuscript is a handwritten or
typed document, typically in its
original form before it is published.
It can refer to various types of
documents, including books,
articles, essays, or any other
written work.
WHEN WRITING A MANUSCRIPT
THERE ARE 5 TYPES OF HEADINGS.

WHAT ARE HEADINGS

• Headings are word-groups


indicating the topics of a text in
a document. They give an idea
about the contents of the
document and about each
section and subsection.

MAIN HEADING

• This indicates the subject matter to


be discussed within the document.
This heading is normally typed at
the top of the document in
SPACED CAPITAL or ALL
CAPITAL or ALL CAPTIALS or
as instructed.
EXAMPLE OF MAIN HEADING
MAIN HEADING CONT’D

• If the main heading is blocked


Start at the left margin then the
entire document should be typed in
blocked style.
SUBHEADING

• This is the second level heading and as


such has a slightly lesser emphasis than
the main heading. It is normally
written below the main heading (if the
document has one) in initial capitals
and underline or initial capitals and
bold or all three based on the question.

SUBHEADING CONT’D

• Just like the main heading the


subheading follows the format of the
document. That is, if the document is a
blocked style document the subheading
will be flushed to the left margin and if
the document is an indented document
the subheading will be centered.
SHOULDER HEADING

• This is a heading text which is above


the paragraph text as a shoulder. It
MUST be blocked irrespective of the
style of the paragraph text. Shoulder
headings may be typed in ALL
CAPITALS or in initial capitals and
underlined or bold.
EXAMPLE OF SHOULDER HEADING
SHOULDER HEADING CON’T

• There should be triple space (TS)


between the preceding paragraph text
and a shoulder heading text and a
double space (DS) between a should
heading text and the paragraph text
below.
PARAGRAPH HEADINGS

• This is a heading text which is part of a


paragraph text. It may be aligned left
(blocked) or indented according to the
style of the paragraph and may not be
followed by a punctuation mark.
EXAMPLES OF PARAGRAPH HEADING
MARGINAL/SIDE HEADINGS

• This is a type of heading that is typed


in the left margin or at the side and is
parallel with the first line of the
paragraph text. Both being separated
by two(2) or three (3) spaces. Long
headings must occupy more than one
line.
