MEANING OF PERSONALITY

“Personality is the sum total ways in


which an individual REACTS and
INTERACTS with others.”

• “Personality is an individual’s unique and


relatively stable pattern of behaviour ,
thoughts ,and feelings .

Suppose that you are new to the

• Its clearly tells us that some factors which go


to determine personality are in born while
some other are acquired
• So we can say that the environment in which
a person lives always has a deep influence
on the formation of his personality.

Theories of Personality
A. Psycho-Analytical theory

• This theory of personality was given by


sigmund Freud.
• Freud divided the mind of a human being into
three parts i.e. conscious , pre-conscious, and
unconscious.

• Now following are the three factors play an


important role for the formation of personality.
1. ID
2. EGO
3. SUPER EGO
B. Trait theory
• It has generally been observed that differently people
behave differently.
• Trait can be defined as “ an enduring attribute of a
person that appeared constantly in a variety of situation.”

• Personality related traits are concerned the following two


theories are important :-
• 1. Allport trait theory

I. b. Personal disposition

• Cardinal disposition:- This is an individual


trait which cannot be hidden . this is in all the
people e.g Mahatma Gandhi faith in non
violence.
• Central disposition :- These trait are almost
found in all the people. e.g sociability ,
depression ,self confidence etc.
• Secondary disposition :- these trait are those
trait which are less important and less
consistent. e.g ,hairstyle ,eating habit dress
etc.
2. Catell ’s trait theory
• Catell ‘s contribution is equally important like
Allport ‘s theory.
• Catell took up the process of discovering
those traits which go to influence personality

Catell has divided the traits of personality in


the following two parts :-

b. source traits

 Openness to experience: Intellectual, imaginative, curious,


broad minded

Research finding: Conscientiousness is the best (but not a


strong) predictor of job performance
C. Personality type theory
• It is the oldest theory .in this individual can
be place in different categories on the basis
of their special traits .
• All the people belonging to a particular
category have similar traits.

The personality type theories have been


presented by Sheldon and karljung . These
are following:-

a. Endomorph:- In this people are short
statured and fat in round shape.
b. Mesomorph:- In this people are attractively
built . these are assertion and aggressiveness.
c. Ectomorph :- In this people are lean and
thin and have a good height.

2. karljung’s personality theory :- karljung ha


made a mention of the following two types of
personality.

D. Social learning theory
• This theory is the outcomes of the
research work conducted by Albert
Bandura.
• He has given more importance to the
social factors than the physical factors.
• the social learning theory emphasizes the
importance of observing and modeling
the behaviour , attitude, and emotional
reaction of others . thus it focuses on
learning by observation and modeling.
Conclusion

• So personality is the dynamic organization


with the individuals of those psycho-
physical systems that determine his unique
adjustment to his environment. And their
different types of theories indicate the
different types of personality for different
types of person.
