Introduction
At its simplest, biotechnology is technology based
on biology–biotechnology harnesses cellular
and biomolecules processes to develop
technologies and products that help improve
our lives and the health of our planet.
FIELD IN BIOTECHNOLOGY
Agricultural Biotechnology:
Agricultural biotechnology, also known as Agritech focuses on developing
genetically modified plant to increase crop yields, size of harvested products and
resistance to diseases and pests.

Genetic Engineering:
Genetic engineering, also called Genetic Modification is the modification and
manipulation of an organism’s genes using technology. It is used to change the
genetic makeup of cells to produce improved or novel organisms.
Industrial Biotechnology
The aim of industrial biotechnology is to create products that will lead to more
enviromentally friendly and cost-effective products used in industry with the help
of Bio-fuels.

Synthetic Biotechnology
Synthetic biology involves the design and construction of novel artificial
biological pathways, organisms and devices or the redesign of existing natural
biological systems.

And Many More…

“Our world is built on biology
and once we begin to understand
it, it then becomes a technology.”
—Ryan Bethencourt
CONTRIBUTION OF
GREAT SCIENTISTS
Karoly Ereky (1878-1952):
The term 'biotechnology' was coined by him in 1919.
In a book he published in Berlin called "Biotechnology of Meat,
Fat and Milk Production in an Agricultural Large- Scale
Farm" By his definition, biotechnology was simply "the
process of using technology to convert raw, biological
material into a useful product“ He is regarded by some as the
"father" of biotechnology.
Eva Ekeblad (1724–1786):
She was widely known for discovering a method in 1746 to make
alcohol and flour from potatoes, allowing greater use of
scarce grains for food production, significantly reducing
Sweden's incidence of famine.
Maurice Lemoigne (1883–1967).
It may seem a bit unbelievable that the first biodegradable
‘bioplastic’ — polyhydroxybutyrate or PHB — was discovered
in 1926 by French biologist and engenieer Maurice Lemoigne.
He was working with the Bacillus megaterium and discoveredthat
it produced PHB when nutrients were scarce and the conditions
were ‘stressful’ for the bacteria.
Rudolf Jaenisch (born 1942)
He had a breakthrough in 1974 with the American scientist
Beatrice Mints when they created the first transgenic mouse.
They showed that injecting retrovirus DNA into mouse
embryos led to the virus being integrated into the animal’s
genome, a change that was also passed to the offspring.
