CHAPTER 1 : Introduction to Signals & Systems

Sub topic
Classification of signals
Learning Outcomes

The students should be able to:

• Classify the signal.

Classification of signals
3. Periodic/aperiodic signals….cont.
Example 1

Solution
a) x(t) = sin 3t , ω = 2π/T = 3 Periodic signal must full fill the condition
x(t) = x(t+T)
x(t+T) = sin 3(t + T)
= sin 3(t + 2π/3 )
= sin (3t + 2π)

Sin (3t + 2π) = Sin 3t Cos 2π + Cos 3t Sin 2π

Sin (3t + 2π) = Sin 3t

Check whether x(t) = x(t+T)? … Yes! And x(t) is a periodic signal!

3. Periodic/aperiodic signals….cont.
Example 2:
𝜋
𝑥5 ( 𝑡 )=5 sin (3000 𝑡 + ) . Determine the periodicity of the signal.
4
Solution:
, then calculate for T

(
𝑥5 ( 𝑡 + 𝑇 ) =5 sin 3000(𝑡 +𝑇 )+
𝜋
4 )
(
¿ 5 sin 3000 (𝑡 +
2𝜋
3000
)+
𝜋
4 )
(
¿ 5 sin 3000 𝑡 + 2 𝜋 + ) 𝜋
Same!

4
¿ 5 sin ( (3000 𝑡 + )+2 𝜋 )
𝜋
A 4 B 1 0

[ (
¿ 5 sin 3000 𝑡 +
𝜋
4 ) (
. cos 2 𝜋 +cos 3000𝑡 +
𝜋
4 )
. sin 2 𝜋
]
… then the signal is periodic!

Example 3 :

𝑎 . 𝑥 4 ( 𝑡 ) =𝑥1 ( 𝑡 ) +3 𝑥 2 (𝑡 ) To solve this.. First, examine the ratio of T ..

If rational..it’s periodic and a new period(T) and freq
𝑏 . 𝑥5 ( 𝑡 ) =𝑥1 ( 𝑡 ) −2 𝑥 3 (𝑡 ) can be calculated.. If irrational..new T and freq doesn’t
Exist.
Where….
Solution a.
𝑥1 ( 𝑡 ) =cos 5 π 𝑡 𝑇1 2/ 5 , T4 is irrational,
=
𝑥 2 ( 𝑡 ) =sin 13 𝑡 𝑇 2 2 π / 13 Hence, x4(t) is a aperiodic

𝑥 3 ( 𝑡 )=sin 4 π 𝑡 Solution b.
