ISLES
NAME AND LOCATION
• Situated off the north west coast of Europe;
• Represented by a large island called Great Britain (+ Wales) and a smaller
one called Ireland;
• The British Isles include a few hundred small islands;
• The 0° longitude (Zero Meridian or Prime Meridian) passes through the
International Time Measure of Greenwich, east of London (local time –
standard time for Britain, from which most other world times are
calculated).

THE COASTS OF BRITAIN
• Irregular coastline; constantly changing
• Many indentations around the coastline
• Typical types of coastline:
Estuary: a funnel-shaped river mouth which results from flooding of tidal areas. Some
of them contain ports: London, Liverpool, Glasgow.
Firth: a drowned glaciated valley formed mostly in Scotland after the Ice Age.
Ria: a long narrow inlet, a river valley drowned by the post-glacial rise in the sea-level.
Peninsula: a tract of land, projecting into a body of water, having water on three sides.

Straits and Channels: narrow stretches of water, which separate two bodies of land
(the Strait of Dover, the English Channel)
