Terms & Phrasal Words


Foreign Phrases & their meanings:
Not every word we use when speaking or writing English is actually
English. Many English words share Latin roots with the Romance
languages such as Spanish, French and Italian. 'De facto' is a commonly
used Latin word in English.

'De facto' means 'in fact' or 'whether by right or not'. It is commonly


used in contrast to the term "de jure", which means "by law". Example:
He may have lived in the UK for a period of time, but his de facto home
was France. Another commonly used Latin expression is 'ab initio'. It
means 'from the beginning'. Example: The first ab initio candidates will
be selected by next month.

What is the meaning of 'felo de se'? 'Felo de se' means 'suicide'.
Example: This appears to be the earliest reported felo de se in New
Zealand. What is 'fait accompli'? It means 'an accomplished fact' or 'a
thing already done'. Example: The enemy's defeat was a fait accompli
long before the formal surrender. What is the meaning of 'Alpha and
omega'? It means 'the beginning and ending'. Example: Collective
beginning is seen as the alpha and omega of trade unionism. What do
you mean by 'ad libitum'? It is a Latin word which means 'according to
pleasure'. Example: We maintained the animals on an ad libitum diet.

What is 'coup de grace'? It means 'a final blow' or 'shot given to kill a
wounded person'. Example: He administered the coup de grace with a
knife. What is 'au revoir'? It means 'good bye until we meet again'.
What is the meaning of 'ad infinitum'? It means 'forever' or 'to infinity'.
Example: Registration is for seven years and may be renewed ad
infinitum. What is the meaning of the expression 'en bloc'? It means 'all
together' or 'all at the same time'. Example: The selectors should resign
en bloc. What does 'ex gratia' mean? It means 'money that is given as a
favour or gift'. Example: Ex gratia payments were made to all those who
had been affected by the quake.

• What is 'sub judice'? 'Sub judice' means 'under judicial consideration
and therefore prohibited from public discussion elsewhere'. Example:
The cases were still subjudice. What is 'Suo moto'? It means 'on its
own motion'. Example: The commission took suo moto control over
the matter. What do you mean by 'quid pro quo'? It means 'tit for tat'
or 'something that is given to a person in return for something they
have done'. Example: The government has promised food aid as a
quid pro quo for the stopping of violence.

8. Deliverable - a thing able to be provided, especially as a
product of a development process.

Meanings of foreign words:
1. Bonafide – genuine, real, without intention to deceive
2. Defacto – in fact whether by right or not, in effect, in reality
3. Dejure - according to rightful entitlement or claim; by right, legally
4. Bonvoyage - used to express good wishes to someone about to set
off on a journey.
5. Fait accompli - a thing that has already happened or been decided
before those affected hear about it, leaving them with no option
but to accept it.
Meaning of Foreign Words:
6. Subjudice - under judicial consideration and therefore prohibited
from public discussion elsewhere. Ex: "the cases were still sub judice"
7. Pro bono - denoting work undertaken without charge, especially
legal work for a client on low income. Ex: "the attorneys are representing
him pro bono"
8. Modus operandi - a particular way or method of doing something.
Ex: "every killer has his own special modus operandi“
9. En Masse - in a group; all together. Ex: "the cabinet immediately
resigned en masse"
10. Prima facie - based on the first impression; accepted as correct
until proved otherwise. Ex: "a prima facie case of professional
misconduct"
