Ch. 5 Photosynthesis Course

Photosynthesis allows plants and other organisms to use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce oxygen and energy in the form of glucose. It is essential for life and the cycling of materials through ecosystems. It occurs in two stages - the first where sunlight is absorbed to produce energy and oxygen, and the second where carbon dioxide and energy are used to produce glucose.

LIVING THING NEEDS
ENERGY TO CARRY OUT
ITS FUNCTIONS.
Animals feed on other organisms to gain energy,

whereas other organisms make their own food

from scratch to get energy.
Autotroph vs Heterotroph

Autotroph Heterotroph
An autotroph is an organism that An autotroph is an organism that cannot
produces its own food. produce its own food, but feeds on other
organisms
Humans: *eat food to survive*
Plants:
Nearly all living organisms obtain energy directly or indirectly from
sunlight.
When you eat meat, you are gaining energy from the cow that once gained
its energy from the plants it fed on.
These autotrophic plants absorbed their energy directly from the sun.
You and the cow would have gotten the energy indirectly from the sun.
Plant cells capture
energy from sunlight and
transform it to chemical
energy (food) by
Photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is possible for
organisms like plants because
they have special organelles in
their cells that allow them to
capture energy from sunlight.
This organelle is the chloroplast
that contains chlorophyll inside.

Chlorophylls absorb energy

from sunlight, and are the
pigments that provide plants the
green color.
WHY ARE PLANTS
GREEN?
The green pigmentation in plants is due
to the chlorophyll inside the chloroplast.
Chlorophyll gives plants its green color.
These chlorophylls absorb energy from
sunlight, which the plant is going to use
to produce oxygen and glucose
Photosynthesis requires
three necessary reactants :
water from the soil, carbon
dioxide from the air, and
energy from sunlight.
Photosynthesis allows the plant to produce its food, called glucose,
and Oxygen gas as waste product into the air in 2 steps.

photosynthesis
Stage 1
TRAPPING SUN’S ENERGY
In this step, chlorophylls absrob energy from sunlight
and change it to the kind of energy that the plant can
use later.
Sunlight splits the water molecule in chloroplasts into
Hydrogen and Oxygen and some energy.
Oxygen gas produced will be released out of the plant as
the first wasre product of photosynthesis.
Stage 2
MAKING
FOOD
In this step, cells produce Glucose,
C₆H₁₂O₆ Glucose is produced using H
from stage 1, and CO2 that is absorbed
from the air by the leaf’s openings. Their
reaction is powered by the energy
produced in stage 1.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS REACTION

Word Equation:
Water + Carbon Dioxide + Energy from sunlight Glucose + Oxygen

Balanced Chemical
Equation:
6H2O + 6CO2 + Energy from sunlight C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O2

6 molecules of water react with 6 molecules of carbon dioxide in the presence of energy from sunlight
to produce one molecules of glucose and 6 molecules of Oxygen gas.
