1.4 Solving System of Linear Equations
1.4 Solving System of Linear Equations
Textbook pages: 19 - 26
Part 1
Solving system of linear
equations by Substitution
Warm-up
• Solve each equation by isolating x on one side and solve
for x in each case:
3x+6y= 6
2x+8y = -12
Warm-up (solution)
• 3x+6y= 6
3x= 6-6y
x= 2-2y or x=-2y+2
• 2x+8y = -12
2x= -12-8y
x= -6 - 4y or x= -4y-6
Learning Objectives
• Solve system of linear equations in two variables by
substitution method
Keywords:
• Isolation
• Variables
• Substitution
• Simplification
What is a system of linear equations?
• The set of two or more linear equations involving the same variables.
x+3y=6 (eq.1)
2x+8y=-12 (eq.2)
Support box
6x-3(7x-18)=9
6x -21x+54=9
-15x=-45
x= 3
Substitute x=3 in either eq.1 or eq.2 or the relation
y-7(3)=-18 y-21=-18 y=3
Solution: (3,3) Quadrant 1
X Number of children
Y Number of adults
From eq(1)
X=2000-Y
