4: Solving Linear systems

using substitution method

Textbook pages: 19 - 26
Part 1
Solving system of linear
equations by Substitution
Warm-up
• Solve each equation by isolating x on one side and solve
for x in each case:

3x+6y= 6

2x+8y = -12
Warm-up (solution)
• 3x+6y= 6
 3x= 6-6y
 x= 2-2y or x=-2y+2

• 2x+8y = -12
2x= -12-8y
x= -6 - 4y or x= -4y-6
Learning Objectives
• Solve system of linear equations in two variables by
substitution method

Keywords:
• Isolation
• Variables
• Substitution

Objectives: Solve system of linear equations in two variables by substitution method
Method of substitution
Solve the following system of linear equation by method of substitution

x+3y=6 (eq.1)
2x+8y=-12 (eq.2)

Support box

1. Isolate a variable in one of the equations

(Either x or y)
2. Substitute the isolated variable in the other
equation
3. This will result in an equation with one
variable. Solve the equation.
4. Substitute the solution from step 3 into
another equation to solve for the other
variable

Your turn!

Solve the following system of linear

Support box equation by method of substitution
• x+y = 4
1. Isolate a variable in one of the equations
(Either x or y)
2x-3y=3
2. Substitute the isolated variable in the other
equation
3. This will result in an equation with one
variable. Solve the equation
4. Substitute the solution from step 3 into Early finishers!
another equation to solve for the other
variable
• y-2x=0
4x+3y=20
Objectives: Solve system of linear equations in two variables by substitution method
Your turn(Solution)
• x+y = 4 (eq.1)
2x-3y=3 (eq.2)
From eq.1: x=4-y
Substitute x=4-y in eq.2
2(4-y)-3y=3
8-2y-3y=3
8-5y=3
5=5y
 y=1
Substitute y=1 in eq. 1 or eq. 2 or the relation
x=4-1  x=3
Solution is: (3,1) , Quadrant 1
Early finishers (Solution)
• y-2x=5 (eq.1)
3x-2y= -5 (eq.2)

From eq.1 y=2x+5

Substitute y=2x+5 in eq.2
 3x-2(2x+5)=-5
 3x-4x-10=-5
 -x-10=-5
 -5=x
 x=-5
Substitute x=-5 in eq.1 or eq.2 or in the relation
 y=2(-5)+5 =-10+5=-5
 y= -5
 Solution is: (-5,-5)
Solution is in Quadrant 3
Objectives: Solve system of linear equations in two variables by substitution method
Example
Solve the following systems of linear equations using substitution method and
state in which quadrant the solution is in
• 6x-3y=9 (eq.1)

y-7x=-18 (eq.2) Support box

1. Isolate a variable in one of the equations

(Either x or y)
2. Substitute the isolated variable in the other
equation
3. This will result in an equation with one
variable. Solve the equation.
4. Substitute the solution from step 3 into
another equation to solve for the other
variable

Objectives: Solve system of linear equations in two variables by substitution method

Example (Solution)
• 6x-3y=9 (eq.1)
y-7x=-18 (eq.2)

From eq.2: y=7x-18

Substitute in eq.1

 6x-3(7x-18)=9
 6x -21x+54=9
 -15x=-45
 x= 3
 Substitute x=3 in either eq.1 or eq.2 or the relation
 y-7(3)=-18  y-21=-18  y=3
 Solution: (3,3)  Quadrant 1

Objectives: Solve system of linear equations in two variables by substitution method

Real-life Problem
La Perle, the first UAE permanent region’s show, located in Dubai at Al
Habtoor city features a breathtaking fusion of immersive artistic
performances. One night, the cost of a ticket to the show was 25$ for
children and 50$ for adults. On that night, the total number of people was
2,000, and the total revenue was 70,000$. How many children and how
many adults bought tickets? Write the system of linear equations that
model this problem and solve the system using method of substitution.

Objectives: Solve system of linear equations in two variables by Elimination method

Real-life Problem (solution)

X Number of children
Y Number of adults

X+Y= 2,000 (eq.1)

25x+50Y=70,000 (eq.2)

From eq(1)
X=2000-Y

Substitute this in eq(2)

25(2000-Y)+50Y=70,000
 50,000-25Y+50Y=70,000
 25Y=20,000
 Y= 800 adults

From eq.1 x=2,000-800  x=1,200 Children
