CONDITIONALS

AND ENGLISH

TEMPORALS
INTRODUCTION

 Conditionals are divided in four groups:


 Zero conditional: facts or routines

 First conditional: real

 Second conditional: unreal


 Third conditional: past

 Each sentence is divided into two parts:


 Conditional clause
 Use a comma after the conditional clause

 Main clause = result

 Unless = If not
ZERO CONDITIONAL

 Use:
 Habitual events, routines or scientific facts

 Structure:
 Conditional clause: If + Present Simple

 Main clause: Present Simple

 Examples:
 If you heat water, it boils

 Water turns to ice if you freeze it

 If Helen gets a message, she replies immediately


FIRST CONDITIONAL

 Use:
 Future possibilities or something that is likely to happen

 Structure:
 Conditional: If + Present Simple

 Main clause:
 Future Simple

 Modal + base form

 Imperative

 Examples:
 If I have enough money next month, I will buy a new car

 We can have a drink before going to the cinema if we go early

 If you want to go out with friends, do your homework first


SECOND CONDITIONAL

 Use:
 Hypothetical or imaginary situations in the present or future

 Structure:
 Conditional: If + Past Simple

 Main clause: would/could/might + base form

 Examples:
 If I had a camera, I would take a picture of the landscape

 If I won the lottery, I could buy a new car

 If I were you, I would work harder to pass the subject

 I could communicate in German if I knew the language


THIRD CONDITIONAL

 Use:
 Unfulfilled condition in the past that cannot be changed
 May be used to express regret about the past

 Structure:
 Conditional: If + Past Perfect Simple

 Main clause: would/could/might + have + past participle

 Examples:
 If he had studied more, he would not have failed the exam

 If I had studied German, I could have communicated better in Germany

 Mum wouldn’t have been angry with me if I had passed all the subjects
TEMPORALS

 Use:
 Time clause that refers to the future

 Structure:
 Time clause: Time expression + Present Simple

 Main clause:
 Future Simple

 Imperative

 Modal + base form

 Examples:
 As soon as I finish homework, I will meet you

 He will not have lunch before we arrive

 When you meet Ana, tell her to phone me
