Spinal Cord

The spinal cord is a long cylindrical structure that connects the brain to the peripheral nervous system and carries signals between them. It is protected by bony vertebrae, meninges and CSF and consists of grey and white matter. The spinal cord has blood supply from anterior and posterior arteries and venous drainage through anteromedian and posteromedian veins.

SPINAL CORD

 The spinal cord is a long, Cylindrical lower

part of central nervous system.
 It is the main pathway for information
connecting the to brain and peripheral
nervous system.
 It is enclosed in the meninges.
 The spinal cord consists of nerves that
carry incoming and outgoing messages
between the brain and the rest of the body
parts. 1
2
CONTI…
Spinal cord is protected by following
coverings: Bony vertebrae, Meninges, CSF.
Bony vertebrae, meninges, CSF surround
and protect the delicate nervous tissue of
spinal cord.

3
FEATURES OF SPINAL CORD
 The spinal cord begins at the medulla
oblongata.
 The cord is about 45cm long in adult male &
42cm in adult female
 Spinal cord is about 1- 1.5 cm in diameter.
 The weight of spinal cord is about 30gms.

4
BLOOD SUPPLY TO SPINAL
CORD
The spinal cord is supplied by anterior
spinal artery & two posterior arteries.
It take origin from the vertebral arteries.

5
VENOUS DRAINAGE
The venous drainage in spinal cord through
the anteromedian and posteromedian veins
that lie in the midline

6
INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF
SPINAL CORD
Spinal cord contains grey matter inside and
white matter outside.
Grey matter
White matter

7
GREY MATTER
 The grey matter present in the spinal cord
arranged in the shape ‘H’ .
 It is pinkish- grey in colour which contains
the cell bodies, dendrites and axon terminals
of neurons.

8
WHITE MATTER

 White matter is the whitish nerve tissue of

the central nervous system that is mainly
composed of myelinated nerve fibers (or
axons).

9
10
 The spinal cord exits through a large hole
in the base of the skull and is enclosed by
the protective vertebral column.
 These spinal nerves are named according
to vertebral column

11
THESE REGIONS ARE:

 Cervical (neck)
 Thoracic (chest)
 Lumbar (abdominal)
 Sacral (pelvic)
 Coccygeal (tailbone)

12
13
THE SPINAL CORD CARRIES OUT
THE FOLLOWING MAJOR
FUNCTIONS:
 The spinal cord is a long, thin bundle of
nervous tissue, support cells & connect to the
brain.
 The spinal cord receives and transmits
Electrical signals throughout the entire body
which means it allowing communication
between different sections of the body and
then back to the brain

14
CONTI..
 It also controls the movement of body.
 Helps in Walking (also known as
locomotion).
 Spinal cord responsible for many
automatic motor Responses.
