What is Data Communication?
The transmission of data between two or more computers. Many computer users need to connect their
computer to other computers, whether located close or by a remote site.
Components of Data Communication
Sender – This is the device that sends the message; it can be a computer,
workstation, smartphone, etc.
Protocol- This is a set of rules that governs how the data/ message is sent.
Simplex
In simplex mode the communication is one directional; only one
device on the link can transmit data, the other device just receives
data. Example a PA system (used to provide information but you are
not able to provide a response).
Communication Methods
Half Duplex
In this communication mode each device on the link can transmit and receive
data, but not at the same time. An example of this is a Walkie-Talkie where
both persons can talk but not at the same time.
Communication Methods
Full Duplex
In full duplex mode both devices transmit and receives data simultaneously.
One example of a full duplex mode is a telephone network where both persons
are able to talk and listen at the same time.
