Auto Routing

e-Engineering Solutions
Using Autorouting

 For autorouting you first create a network of potential

paths for the cables.
 Pro/E examines the network, determines the shortest
distance that the wires can take between their
connectors, and proposes a routing.
 You can either accept the routing or modify the network
to take a different route.

Steps for Autorouting

1. Logically reference a diagram or wire list to get

connector and entry port info.
2. Designate connectors.
3. Define spools
4. Create a network.
5. Specify location priorities for the network.
6. Start routing wires and cables using autoroute. Accept
or reject the routing the system proposes.
7. If required change the path.

Information before Autorouting

 Specify connectors and entry ports.

 Designate connectors.
 Specify / Create spools.
 Create wires and cables.

Create a Network

 Design the network with appropriate options.

 Use the appropriate number of location points.
 Plan for the minimum bend radius.
 Plan for minimum bend radius.
 Use the Location option to join network segments.
 Use the Along Axis option only once per axis.
 When using closed loops delete extra segments after
finishing autorouting.
 Regenerate after making changes to the network.

Setting Location Priorities

 By default the system  Primary (Cyan)

chooses the shortest  Required (Magenta)
continuous path between  Disallowed (Yellow)
connectors.  Secondary (White)
 However you can customise
by designating location points
with certain priorities.
 Pro/E evaluates the location
priorities each time you
autoroute.

Resolving Network Failures

 When autorouting fails, the system instructs you to

review the autoroute.fails.# file determine the wires that
failed and identify the source of the problem.

Autorouting to Splices

 If a splice is present, designated in the assembly and is

the “from” or “to” connector for a wire, the system
autoroutes the wire to the splice as it would to any
connector.
 If the splice is not assembled you can autoroute the wire
with one connector and one required location and insert
the splice at the required location later.

Creating Network Bundles

 The system does not automatically create bundles for

the network, instead it allows you to assign bundles and
sheathing to network segments, even if wires are not
present yet.
 To autoroute within a bundle you must create it using
the Along Path option and pass through network
locations only.
 The system automatically routes inside network bundles
if you choose the Rt in Bndles option.

Advantages of Manual Routing

 Manual routing is less time taking.

 It is easier to modify.
 Trouble shooting is easier in manual routing.
