General Definitions:
Air Admittance Valve - One-way valve designed to allow air to enter the plumbing drainage system when negative
pressures develop in the piping system. The device shall close by gravity and seal the vent terminal at zero
differential pressure (no-flow conditions) and under positive internal pressures.

General Definitions:
Air Break (Drainage System) - A piping arrangement in which a drain from a fixture, appliance or device discharges
indirectly into another fixture, receptacle or interceptor at a point below the flood level rim and above the trap seal.
Air Gap (Drainage System) - The unobstructed vertical distance through the free atmosphere between the outlet of
the waste pipe and the flood level rim of the receptacle into which the waste pipe is discharging.

General Definitions:
Drain - Any pipe that carries waste water or waterborne wastes in a building drainage system.
Drainage Fixture Unit (dfu) - The drainage fixture-unit value for a particular fixture depends on its volume rate of
drainage discharge, on the time duration of a single drainage operation and on the average time between
successive operations.
Emergency Floor Drain - A floor drain that does not receive the discharge of any drain or indirect waste pipe, and
that protects against damage from accidental spills, fixture overflows and leakage.

General Definitions:
Area Drain - A receptacle designed to collect surface or storm water from an open area.
Bathroom Group - A group of fixtures consisting of a water closet, lavatory, bathtub or shower, including or excluding
a bidet, an emergency floor drain or both. Such fixtures are located together on the same floor level.

Vent Stack - A vertical vent pipe installed primarily for the purpose of providing circulation of air to and from any part of
the drainage system.

Circuit Vent - A vent that connects to a horizontal drainage branch and vents two traps to not more than eight traps
or trapped fixtures connected into a battery.

General Definitions:
Building Drain - That part of the lowest piping of a drainage system that receives the discharge from soil, waste and
other drainage pipes inside and that extends 30 inches in developed length of pipe beyond the exterior walls of the
building and conveys the drainage to the building sewer.
Combined - A building drain that conveys both sewage and storm water or other drainage.
Sanitary - A building drain that conveys sewage only.
Storm - A building drain that conveys storm water or other drainage, but not sewage.

Building Trap - A device, fitting or assembly of fittings installed in the building drain to prevent circulation of air between
the drainage system of the building and the building sewer.

Cleanout - An access opening in the drainage system utilized for the removal of obstructions. Types of cleanouts include
a removable plug or cap, and a removable fixture or fixture trap.

Fixture Drain - The drain from the trap of a fixture to a junction with any other drain pipe.
Flood Rim Level - The edge of the receptacle from which water overflows.

General Definitions:
Stack - A general term for any vertical line of soil, waste, vent or inside conductor piping that extends through not
fewer than one story with or without offsets.
Trap - A fitting or device that provides a liquid seal to prevent the emission of sewer gases without materially affecting
the flow of sewage or waste water through the trap.
Trap Seal - The vertical distance between the weir and the top of the dip of the trap.

General:
301.6 Prohibited locations - Plumbing systems shall not be located in an elevator shaft or in an elevator equipment room.
Exception: Floor drains, sumps and sump pumps shall be permitted at the base of the shaft, provided that they are
indirectly connected to the plumbing system.

308 Pipe Support:
308.2 Piping seismic support - Where earthquake loads are applicable in accordance with the building code, plumbing
piping supports shall be designed and installed for the seismic forces in accordance with the International Building Code.
308.3 Materials - Hangers, anchors and supports shall support the piping and the contents of the piping. Hangers and
strapping material shall be of approved material that will not promote galvanic action.
308.4 Structural attachment - Hangers and anchors shall be attached to the building construction in an approved manner.

603 Water Service:
603.1 Size of water service pipe - The water service pipe shall be sized to supply water to the structure in the quantities
and at the pressures required. The minimum diameter of water service pipe shall be 3/4 inch.
603.2 Separation of water service and building sewer - Water service pipe and the building sewer shall be separated by
5 feet of undisturbed or compacted earth.
Exceptions:
1. The required separation distance shall not apply where the bottom of the water service pipe within 5 of the sewer
is a minimum of 12 inches above the top of the highest point of the sewer.
2. Water service pipe is permitted to be located in the same trench with a building sewer.
3. The required separation distance shall not apply where a water service pipe crosses a sewer pipe, provided the
water service pipe is sleeved to at least 5 feet horizontally from the sewer pipe centerline on both sides of such
crossing.

704 Drainage Piping Installation:
704.1 Slope of horizontal drainage piping - Horizontal drainage piping shall be installed in uniform alignment at
uniform slopes. The minimum slope of a horizontal drainage pipe shall be in accordance with Table 704.1.

704 Drainage Piping Installation:
704.2 Change in size - The size of the drainage piping shall not be reduced in the direction of the flow.
704.3 Connections to offsets and bases of stacks - Horizontal branches shall connect to the bases of stacks at a
point located not less than 10 times the diameter of the drainage stack downstream from the stack.

708 Cleanouts:
708.1.1 Horizontal drains within buildings - All horizontal drains shall be provided with cleanouts located not more than
100 feet apart.
Exception: Horizontal fixture drain piping serving a non-removable trap shall not be required to have a cleanout for
the section of piping between the trap and the vent connection for such trap.

708 Cleanouts:
708.1.3 Building drain and building sewer junction - There shall be a cleanout near the junction of the building drain and
the building sewer. An approved two-way cleanout is allowed to be used at this location to serve as a required cleanout
for both the building drain and building sewer.

708.1.4 Changes of direction - Cleanouts shall be installed at each change of direction greater than 45 degrees in the
building sewer, building drain and horizontal waste or soil lines.

708 Cleanouts:
708.1.5 Cleanout Size - Cleanouts shall be the same size as the piping served by the cleanout, except that cleanouts
for piping larger than 4 inches need not be larger than 4 inches.
Exceptions:
1. A removable P-trap with slip or ground joint connections can serve as a cleanout for drain piping that is one size larger
than the P-trap size.
2. Cleanouts located on stacks can be one size smaller than the stack size.

708 Cleanouts:
708.1.8 Installation arrangement - The installation arrangement of a cleanout shall enable cleaning of drainage piping
only in the direction of drainage flow.
• Cleanouts for 8-inch and larger piping shall be provided with a clearance of not less than 36 inches from, and
perpendicular to, the face of the opening to any obstruction.

708 Cleanouts:
708.1.10 Cleanout access:-
• Required cleanouts shall not be installed in concealed locations.
• Concealed locations include, but are not limited to, the inside of plenums, within walls, within floor/ceiling
assemblies, below grade and in crawl spaces where the height from the crawl space floor to the nearest
obstruction along the path from the crawl space opening to the cleanout location is less than 24 inches.
• Cleanouts with openings at a finished wall shall have the face of the opening located within 1-1 / 2 inches of the
finished wall surface.
• Cleanouts located below grade shall be extended to grade level so that the top of the cleanout plug is at or above
grade.
• A cleanout installed in a floor or walkway that will not have a trim cover installed shall have a countersunk plug
installed so the top surface of the plug is flush with the finished surface of the floor or walk-way.

903 Vent Terminals:
903.1 Roof extension - Open vent pipes that extend through a roof shall be terminated not less than [NUMBER] inches
above the roof. Where a roof is to be used for assembly or as a promenade, observation deck, sunbathing deck or similar
purposes, open vent pipes shall terminate not less than 7 feet above the roof.

903 Vent Terminals:
903.2 Frost closure - Where the 97.5-percent value for outdoor design temperature is 0°F or less, vent
extensions through a roof or wall shall be not less than 3 inches in diameter. Any increase in the size of the vent shall
be made not less than 1 foot inside the thermal envelope of the building.
903.5 Location of vent terminal - An open vent terminal from a drainage system shall not be located directly beneath
any door, open able window, or other air intake opening of the building or of an adjacent building, and any such
vent terminal shall not be within 10 feet horizontally of such an opening unless it is at least 2 feet above the top of
such opening.

905 Vent Connections and Grades:
905.1 Connection - All individual, branch and circuit vents shall connect to a vent stack, stack vent, air admittance valve
or extend to the open air.
905.2 Grade - All vent and branch vent pipes shall be so graded and connected as to drain back to the drainage pipe
by gravity.
905.3 Vent connection to drainage system - Every dry vent connecting to a horizontal drain shall connect above
the centerline of the horizontal drain pipe.

905 Vent Connections and Grades:
905.5 Height above fixtures - A connection between a vent pipe and a vent stack or stack vent shall be made at least 6
inches above the flood level rim of the highest fixture served by the vent. Horizontal vent pipes forming branch vents,
relief vents or loop vents shall be at least 6 inches above the flood level rim of the highest fixture served.

909 Fixture Vents:
909.1 Distance of trap from vent - Each fixture trap shall have a protecting vent located so that the slope and the developed
length in the fixture drain from the trap weir to the vent fitting are within the requirements set forth in Table 906.1.
Exception: The developed length of the fixture drain from the trap weir to the vent fitting for self-siphoning fixtures, such
as water closets, shall not be limited.

912 Wet Venting:
912.1 Horizontal wet vent permitted – Any combination of fixtures within two bathroom groups located on the same
floor level is permitted to be vented by a horizontal wet vent. The wet vent shall be considered to be the vent for the
fixtures and shall extend from the connection of the dry vent along the direction of the flow in the drain pipe to the
most downstream fixture drain connection to the horizontal branch drain. Each wet-vented fixture drain shall
connect independently to the horizontal wet vent. Only the fixtures within the bathroom groups shall connect to the
wet-vented horizontal branch drain. Any additional fixtures shall discharge downstream of the horizontal wet vent.

914 Circuit Venting:
914.1 Circuit vent permitted - Not more than eight fixtures connected to a horizontal branch drain shall be permitted to
be circuit vented. Each fixture drain shall connect horizontally to the horizontal branch being circuit vented.
The horizontal branch drain shall be classified as a vent from the most downstream fixture drain connection to the
most upstream fixture drain connection to the horizontal branch.

915 Combination Waste and Vent System:
915.1 Type of fixtures - A combination waste and vent system shall not serve fixtures other than floor drains,
sinks, lavatories and drinking fountains.
Combination waste and vent systems shall not receive the discharge from a food waste disposer or clinical sink.
915.2 Installation - The only vertical pipe of a combination waste and vent system shall be the connection between
the fixture drain and the horizontal combination waste and vent pipe. The vertical distance shall not exceed 8 feet.
915.2.1 Slope - The slope of a horizontal combination waste and vent pipe shall not exceed one-half unit vertical in
12 units horizontal (4-percent slope) and shall be not less than that indicated in Table 704.1.

1002 Trap Requirements:
1002.1 Fixture traps - Each plumbing fixture shall be separately trapped by a liquid-seal trap.
The vertical distance from the fixture outlet to the trap weir shall not exceed 24 inches, and the horizontal distance shall
not exceed 30 inches measured from the centerline of the fixture outlet to the centerline of the inlet of the trap.
