Illustrating System of Linear Equation

The document discusses different types of systems of linear equations according to the number of solutions. It defines consistent and independent, consistent and dependent, and inconsistent systems. It provides examples of each type and illustrates the corresponding slopes and y-intercepts. Practice and quiz questions are also included for students to identify the type of system.

GOOD MORNING!!!

DE VEYRA, IRENE MAY A.

Motivation
Instruction: Identify the missing words using its corresponding image as a
hint. Later, this images and words will be utilized to widen the
understanding of the topic of the learners.
Activity 1: Transform Me:
Direction: Transform each equations into the slope-
intercept form (𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏).

Linear Equations Slope-Intercept Form

( y = mx + b )

1. -3x+y=3

2. -3x+y=3

3. 2y=8x+14
Activity 2: Identify Me:
Direction: Identify the slope (𝑚) and y-intercept (𝑏) of the given equation.

Given slope (𝑚) y-intercept (𝑏)

1. y=-3x+12

2. y=3x+3

3. 2y=8x+14
Learning Objective:

Illustrates a system of linear equations in two variables. M8AL-Ih-1

Subtask: Identify the types of systems of linear equation in terms of

slope, y-intercept and number of solutions.
TOPIC
Types of System of Linear Equations in Two
Variables According to the Number of Solutions
Consistent and Independent

A system of linear equations having exactly one

solution. The slopes of the lines defined by the
equations are not equal, their y-intercepts could be
equal or unequal.
Consistent and independent

Example:

Equation 1: x + y = 5 Equation 2: x - y = 1

x - y =1
-y = -x + 1
x+y=5
-y = -x + 1
y = -x + 5
-1 -1
y=x-1
m = -1 ; b = 1

m = 1 ; b = -1
Consistent and Dependent

A system of linear equations having infinitely many

solutions. The slopes of the lines defined by the
equations are equal and their y-intercepts are also
equal.
Consistent and independent

Example:
Equation 1: 3x + 2y = 6 Equation 2: 6x + 4y = 12

3x + 2y = 6 6x + 4y = 12
2y = -3x + 6 4y = -6x + 12
2y = -3x + 6 4y -6x + 12
=

-3 -6
y= x+ 3 y = x +3

-3 -3
m= 2 ; b=3 m= ;b= 3
2
Inconsistent
A systems of linear equations having no solution. The
slopes of the lines defined by the equations are equal
but their y-intercepts are not equal.
Consistent and independent

Example:
Equation 1: 2x - y = 5 Equation 2: 2x - y = 3
2x - y = 5 2x - y = 3
-y = -2x + 5 -y = -2x + 3
-y = -2x + 5 -y -2x + 3
=
-1 -1 -1 -1
y = 2x - 5 y = 2x - 3

m=2 ; b=-5 m=2 ;b= -3
