Activity 3: The Pythagorean Theorem
and It’s Proof

Directions: The students will be divided into four (4)

groups. Each group will be given a set of figures. They will
be given problems to be solved using the proof of the
Pythagorean theorem. The group that has already finished
their work is allowed to post it in the front.
For Group 1, their task is statements 1 and 2. Statements 3
and 4 are for Group 2. For Group 3, statements 5 and 6;
for the last group, Group 4, statements 7 and 8.
The Pythagorean Theorem

The Pythagorean theorem is a

fundamental principle in
geometry that applies to right
triangles. The Pythagorean
Theorem state that:
The Pythagorean Theorem

“In a right triangle, the square

of the length of the hypotenuse
(the side opposite the right angle)
is equal to the sum of the squares
of the lengths of the other two
sides.”
Example:
Hypotenuse is the opposite of the angles
or of a .
The other side also called a leg.
One of the shorter sides of the right
triangle. This is represented by (a).
The longer side of the right triangle. The
side representing it is denoted by (b).

Right triangles.
Examples Of The Pythagorean
Theorem
When you use the Pythagorean
Theorem, just remember that the length
of the hypotenuse is always ‘c’ in the
formula above. Look at the following

Finding The Length of a Side of a Right Triangle
Using Pythagorean Theorem

Step 1. Identify the legs and

the hypotenuse of the right
triangle. The legs have
lengths 6 cm and 8 cm and 𝑥
is the length of the
hypotenuse, the side
opposite the right angle.

Step 2. Substitute the

variables by the given values
into the formula (remember
‘c’ is the length of the
hypotenuse).

groups. Each group will be given a set of whiteboard
and markers. They will be given five (5)sets of
problems to be solved using Pythagorean theorem.
The group to raise their board first and got the correct
answer will gain a point. The group to garner the
most number of points will be declared as the winner.
